The Great War

Aggressive Nationalism Countries were bitter and wanted to gain lost provinces. Some countries were very proud of the success with their military power and victories. Countries were making deals with others promising to defend them. Countries were also afraid that some of their people were going to leave and start their own countries.

Imperialism and Economic Rivalries Countries were feeling threatened by other countries economic growth. Countries felt they weren't being respected by powerful nations. Competitions over colonies helped start the brink of the war. Countries were uniting to get in the way of other countries imperialist desires.

Militarism and the Arms Race Militaries in different countries began to dominate other nations policies. Countries believed that the strongest survived. Countries that were against each other tried to make the other believe that they were forming a bigger and better military. The fear of war made the military leaders more influenced in government.

The Tangle Of Alliances Out of fear nations began forming alliances with each other promising to defend the other country no matter what. This system made it easy for small local wars to a horrifying world war. Why can’t we all just love each other?!?! Ha, this is what this picture reminded me of!!

Poison Gas Poison Gas used in World War I was a huge military innovation. There were other gasses like poison gas, such as tear gas and mustard gas. The killing capacity of gas was limited, only four percent of combat deaths were due to gas. In the later stages of the war, the amount it was used increased, and its effectiveness decreased. World War I had an expressed view as “the chemists war”.
