5 Objectives To raise awareness on the impacts of tourism on the environment To reduce waste and to ensure that best practice is followed in waste and natural resources management. To identify environmental challenges or issues that is confined with the demo area and to proffer remedies. SENSITIZATION LECTURE ON WASTE AND NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT.

7 TRAINING IN BEST PRACTICES ON TOUR-GUIDING. Objectives To equip the tour guides with the visitors management skills. To equip the local tour guide with practical tour guiding skills. To enhance their ability to interpret and disseminate correct and precise information. To improve their interpersonal behavioral skills

10 Training on Best Practices in Boat Operation. Objectives To strengthen the economic linkages between boat operation and tourism. To equip boat operators in Badagry with the basic firefighting techniques. To equip the boat operators on the basic standard safety and rescue practices. To occupationally position boat operators towards basic techniques of boat operations.

14 Training in Curio and Souvenir Production Objectives Maximize local economic benefits by increasing linkages and reducing leakages, by ensuring that communities are involved in and benefit from tourism. To create employment through souvenir production. Creating additional and alternative source of income through souvenir production. Establishing a souvenir market in the demo site. Preserving the indigenous skills in craft and souvenir making.

18 CHALLENGES FACED DURING IMPLEMENTATION. The challenges encountered are mainly administrative issues which include: Irregular DSMC meetings No provision for contingency in the actual budget Delay in the disbursement of funds Inadequate accessibility to the internet

19 RESULTS ACHIEVED SO FAR. 51 stakeholders attended the public lecture on Waste and Natural Resources Management. Stakeholders are more aware of the negative impacts of improper waste disposal on the health of the local people and the environment. The local people are more involved in waste and environmental issues. A total of 48 participants was recorded for the training programme on Tour Guiding. We now have well informed tour guides. The skills and abilities of Tour Guides improved to provide better visitors experience. 18 boat operators participated in the training programme on Boat Operation. The boat operators in Badagry became more knowledgeable in Boat Operation. Improved skills and the ability of the boat operators. Improved visitors experience. Improved the confidence of visitors to go on boat ride.

20 A total of 136 participants was recorded for the training in Curio and Souvenir Production. The local people are aware of the importance and economic benefits of souvenir production. Resuscitation of traditional handicraft skill. Creation of a temporary site for the souvenir market.

21 A. SENSITIZATION LECTURE ON THE NEED TO PROTECT THE WILDLIFE AND MANGROVE The wildlife is being threatened along the Gberefu peninsular in Badagry by the uncontrolled activities of the local poachers. e.g. Indiscriminate killing of Turtles, Monkeys, Snakes, Alligators, Birds, etc. Indiscriminate cutting of the mangrove and coconut trees for firewood, construction, etc. The reasons for the above are lack of awareness, weak enforcement of environmental laws and high poverty rate among the local people. B. 2 DAY LECTURE ON BETTER MANAGEMENT OF TOURISM ASSETS BY THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT The purpose of the workshop is to strengthen the involvement of, and to enhance the capacity of the Local Government in Tourism and Environmental Management. To expand the knowledge of the Local Government Management about its tourism assets and potentials RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FURTHER ACTIVITIES TO HELP ENSURE THAT ECO-TOURISM CONTRIBUTES TO LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION.

22 Increase opportunities for people to engage in sustainable tourism activities that are environmentally friendly to the destination. There is an urgent need for the establishment of Local Government Tourism Committees with the following terms of reference: – Recommending tourism projects for implementation at the Council level. – Advising on tourism matters. – preserving heritage sites and monuments. – Promoting community interest in tourism..
