What is Crimestoppers? Only charity in UK helping to solve crimes and find criminals Runs 24/7 call bureau 0800 555 111 and website www.crimestoppers-uk.org For people who don't want to go to Police to report crime – they can give us information about crime anonymously which we pass onto Police Not a replacement for the Police and not for 999 situations Not part of the Police or a Government department Not part of Crimewatch Founded 26 years ago by Lord Ashcroft.

It works! 1,000+ people contact Crimestoppers every day across the UK, leading to 260 pieces of useful information, meaning that –14 people are arrested and charged every day across the UK –£6.5k stolen goods are recovered per day, and £25.5k of illegal drugs seized every day! –A person is arrested for murder every eight days across the UK And in Derbyshire……. 1836 pieces of useful information passed to the police last year 133 arrests and charges given, all linked to the calls made 276 positive actions linked to the calls (warrant, crime prevention, ANPR etc) £39k property recovered and £128k drugs (street value) also recovered

The anonymity guarantee Crimestoppers are proud never to have broken the anonymity promise No personal details are taken Calls are not recorded Calls and online forms cannot be traced Users are not required to make a statement to the police Users are not required to appear in court Rewards paid without compromising identity

Why Crimestoppers? Scared to come forward because of revenge and reprisals Might know offender – might expose own activity Our anonymity guarantee gives peace of mind We take information on any crime or criminal activity Trained call handlers can help get the information that is useful to the police The public doing their bit for their community by helping to make it safer M25 Rapist example - 2001

Role of the volunteer committee Represent and promote the charity at a regional/local level Support local crime campaigns devised in conjunction with police, CDRPs and others - burglary, criminal damage, drugs crime Fundraise to enable local activity To manage the Crimestoppers reward scheme

What benefit can we bring you? We can bring in intelligence that may otherwise be unavailable We can help you meet Police/CSP targets – detect and prevent priority crimes Enhance community safety – something is being done Community cohesion through volunteering Add to your skill set by volunteering – media training, website editing…… We can project manage campaigns and provide a full evaluation Cost effective

fearless.org Fearless.org Why do we target young people? There were an estimated 810,000 crimes experienced by children aged 10 to 15; of these 55% were violent crimes while most of the remaining crimes were thefts of personal property. (British Crime Survey 2014 ) 35 per cent of children who lived in the most deprived areas had a positive opinion of the police compared to 60 per cent of children who live in the least deprived areas. (British Crime Survey - 2009/10)

Question fearless.org Why do you think some young people might find it hard to give information about crime?

They do not trust the police. They feel that they might get arrested themselves. They don’t want to go to court. They are scared that someone might find out. They are scared that they might put themselves in danger. They don’t want to be known as a snitch. fearless.org
