6. The Duties of the President Duties of the President are outlined in the Constitution. − Commander-in-Chief − Appoint heads of executive offices (with Senate Consent) − Foreign Policy (makes treaties, with Senate Consent) − Assure all laws are faithfully executed. − Lawmaking Power

7. Presidential Terms/Salary Terms The 22 nd Amendment passed in 1951 limits the president to 2 four- year terms. It also limits the VP who takes over to 2 years or less of the former president’s terms. The max amount of years is 10.

8. Salary & Benefits The president’s salary is not specified in the Constitution. The current salary is $400,000 per year with $50,000 for expenses related to duties. Some presidential benefits include: Air Force One, limos, healthcare, White House, pension.

9. Presidential Qualifications Basic Constitutional Requirements 1.Must be at least 35 years old 2.Must be a natural born citizen of the United States. 3.Must be a resident of the United States for at least 14 years prior to taking office.

10. In addition to the Constitutional Requirements Presidents also must possess other requirements to be a great candidate. 1.Government Experience- Ex. US Senators, State Governors, State Reps. 2.Money- For campaigning, fund raising. 3.Political Beliefs- Moderate platforms and visions for the American People.

12. Presidential Disability Set by the 25 th Amendment The VP becomes acting president if president unable to perform duties. Must inform Congress that the President is unable to perform duties. The president can resume their duties within their term whenever they can fulfil them. If the cabinet and VP do not believe that the President can fulfil duties, Congress has 21 days to settle the dispute. (Must have 2/3 vote in President’s favor to resume office).

13. The Role of the Vice President The Constitution gives the VP only 2 duties. 1.Presides over the Senate and votes in case of a tie. 2.Helps decide whether the president is disabled and acts as president should that happen

14. Modern Responsibility VP duties depends on what the President assigns. Presidents before Eisenhower usually ignored their VPs. Participate in policy discussion, defend presidential policies.
