FaccoEURISOL DS Orsay, 3 Feb 2005 Task 7 Proton Accelerator “The objective of the Proton Accelerator Task is the design a 5 mA CW, 1 GeV proton linac (with heavy ion capability for A/q ≤ 2 and possibly up to A/q = 3) as the main driver for EURISOL. This development will have possible application in all projects requiring high intensity proton beams.”

FaccoEURISOL DS Orsay, 3 Feb 2005 Main goals for the first 12 months Acquire from other tasks the specifications which are still fluctuating –Final energy of the deuteron beam; required Heavy Ion capability; extraction lines specifications; time structure requirements; … Define the accelerator specifications –Beam parameters –Operation modes (cw, pulsability, set-up mode, multitasking…) –Accelerator characteristics Provide a first consistent layout for the 1 GeV linac and deuteron injector (extraction lines excluded) –Analyse possible different scenarios –Choose the baseline design to be optimized –First simulation of the overall linac layout

MeV Multi-mode operation with 1 GeV protons serving different lines –1 long pulse (high intensity beam ~5mA) –1 or more short pulses (e.g. 100 μA) p,d rfq chopper 2-gap SC linac 200 MeV 1 GeV Fast deflector Deuteron extraction ? 1.8 A*MeV 176 MHz 352 MHz 704 MHz To RIB sources

FaccoEURISOL DS Orsay, 3 Feb 2005 Hot points Possibility of efficient p,d acceleration with the same linac and RFQ using the SARAF approach (not yet considered in the EURISOL Report of 2002) Possibility of pulsed proton beam for multi-mode running (e.g. 100 μA on direct targets + 4 mA on a 2-stage target ) –Necessity of a beam chopper at ~2 MeV –Necessity of a fast deflector at 1 GeV
