Contents Criteria for automobile design. General materials used in a automobile design. Timeline of materials used in automobile design. Latest advances in material design in automobile design

Primary criteria for automobile design – SAFE Safety, Affordability, Fuel Efficiency, Environamental Friendliness. Approaches to satisfy SAFE criteria.

General Materials Used in Automobile Design High Strength Steel (HSS)  Used for building chassis and body to reduce weight and increase weight. High strength Low-alloy (HSLA) steel  Stronger, more corrosion resistance, more economical alloying & plasticity and used in military vehicles.

Aluminum  Chassis, engine block & body  The typical alloying elements are copper, magnesium, manganese, silicon and Zinc

Plastics Specific developments  High performance  Interiors fig: Plastic fuel tank  Mostly used for weight reduction and is not easily corroded. Fig:Styron blow moulded seat back

The Timeline The first car designed, built & patented by Karl Benz in 1885. The Motor-Hansom in 1903

The Brass Era (1909)  Use of brass in some body parts. Motorcycles The M2B33 engine in the R32 had a aluminium alloy cylinders and a light alloy cylinder head

Traditional Royal enfield engines were made of cast iron.

Latest advances in material science in automobile design Use of aluminum in engine blocks  BMW Z4 Roadster uses a aluminium- magnesium engine block.

Use of carbon fiber(Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer)  In modern cars carbon fibers are used in building chassis, body panel and many other components.  Stronger than steel and light weight.

Koenigsegg Agera uses a full carbon fibre body and a carbon fibre with a aluminium honeycomb.

The Bugatti Veyron uses a titanium alloy(Titanium, carbon, magnesium, and aluminium) engine block and components in its W16 engine.

Use of materials and material science in automobile industry is a very important aspect of automobile design. More advanced materials are being used to make safer, reliable and efficient vehicles. Use of smart materials
