1 Unit 3 Day 11 (Jim Crow) Quote: “I am not ashamed of having fought on the side of slavery – a soldier fights for his country – right or wrong – he is not responsible for the political merits of the cause he fights in. 2 Jim Crow The Freedman’s Bureau will be created in 1865. This organization was supposed to help newly freed slaves with housing and food, education, healthcare and employment.

3 Southern states passed “Black Codes” that would limit the blacks’ right to own property, conduct business, buy and rent land, and move freely through public spaces. Not working became a crime (vagrancy laws).

4 Sharecropping became common among blacks in the South. They would rent land from a plantation owner and in exchange the plantation owner took a portion of the crops.

5 Southern states also passed “Jim Crow laws” that would create separate facilities for blacks including schools, restaurants, parks, and public transportation.

6 Reconstruction officially ended in 1877. The South was physically rebuilt but many racial and political issues remained.
