2. Jim Crow The Freedman’s Bureau will be created in 1865. This organization was supposed to help newly freed slaves with housing and food, education, healthcare and employment.

3. Southern states passed “Black Codes” that would limit the blacks’ right to own property, conduct business, buy and rent land, and move freely through public spaces. Not working became a crime (vagrancy laws).

4. Sharecropping became common among blacks in the South. They would rent land from a plantation owner and in exchange the plantation owner took a portion of the crops.

5. Southern states also passed “Jim Crow laws” that would create separate facilities for blacks including schools, restaurants, parks, and public transportation.

6. Reconstruction officially ended in 1877. The South was physically rebuilt but many racial and political issues remained.
