7. Where did the 5 themes come from? The 5 Themes of Geography originated by the National Geographic Society to fulfill a need for geographers (people who study the earth and everything on it) categorize everything they learn.

9. Location Where is it? Why is it there? Two Types of Location  Absolute Relative

10. Absolute Location A specific place on the Earth’s surface Uses a grid system– latitude & longitude A global address

11. North Carolina: Absolute Location North Carolina 36° N 79° W Kannapolis 35°, 49’ N 80°, 61’ W

12. Relative Location Where a place is in relation to another place Uses directional words to describe –Cardinal and intermediate directions

13. North Carolina: Relative Location North Carolina is bordered by Virginia to the north, South Carolina to the south, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and Tennessee to the west. North Carolina is in the geographic east of the contiguous United States. North Carolina is a Southern state.
