3 What is Girfec? Getting it right for every child is the national approach to improving outcomes for all children by placing the child at the centre of thinking, planning and action It affects all services that impact on children (i.e. adult services working with parents/carers) It builds from universal services: moving crisis intervention to early intervention It is based on research and evidence of best practice and proven benefits Girfec, Curriculum for Excellence and the Early Years Framework are strongly connected.

4 The Vision In order to become successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens all Scotland’s children and young people:- Well Being Indicators: Safe Healthy Achieving Nurtured Active Respected Responsible Included

5 GIRFEC Core Components 1.Focus on improving outcomes, and Early intervention 2.A common approach to gaining consent and to sharing information where appropriate 3.Integral role for children, young people and families 4.A coordinated and unified approach to identifying concerns, assessing needs, agreeing actions, joint plan and outcomes 5.Streamlined planning, assessment and decision making processes that lead to efficient provision for children. 1 child, 1 assessment, 1 action plan, 1 review process 6.Consistent high standards of co-operation, joint working and communication where more than one agency needs to be involved 7.A lead professional to co-ordinate and monitor where necessary 8.Maximising skills within universal services to address needs and risks 9.A confident and competent workforce 10.The capacity to share information electronically

6 Childs Pathway

7 Lead Professional Lead professional role is........ To ensure children, young people and families participate in decisions that affect them. To ensure the child and families views are heard and taken into account. To be the main point of contact for children, young people, practitioners and family members to reduce repetition. To promote teamwork between agencies and with the child or young person and family. To ensure assessment of risk / need is completed. Monitor how well the child’s action plan is working and if it is being successful in improving the child’s situation. To be familiar with the remit of other agencies. To ensure co-ordination of the work of the team, arrange for the agencies to review together their involvement and amend the child’s action plan where necessary. To ensure child is supported through all transitional processes.

8 ASSESSMENT MUST FOCUS ON Personal and family strengths and pressures Support networks and resources available Needs and risks The gaps that need to be filled and the resources and options to fill them Continuity of progression, especially at times of transition Meeting agreed or statutory timescales

9 So what does this mean for children, young people and their families? Children will: –get help when they need it –feel confident about the help they are getting –understand what is happening and why –have been listened to carefully –be appropriately involved –be able to rely on appropriate help and have a streamlined and co-ordinated response It will improve outcomes for children and young people.
