Food Security & Hunger HFN20

Definitions Food security: Exists when all people at all times have both physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs for an active and healthy life. Food insecurity: Exists when people lack access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food, and therefore are not consuming enough for an active and healthy life.

Some Causes The rise in food and fuel prices on the global market threatens millions of people around the world. Adverse weather conditions can play a role. The rising price of oil, diversion of land to biofuel production, declining agricultural productivity, along with various other social, economic, and political factors, have all contributed to changes in food production, availability, and prices.

How have things changed? In the past, food crises have largely been weather or environment related. Drought, storms, floods, or insects destroyed crops and resulted in regional famines

Reasons for food insecurity Riddle #1 I exist, but I can’t be made. China is using more of me than ever before. Canada is wondering how to replace me. Pineapples and bananas need me to get to you. Apples and tomatoes? Not so much. The food on your table is there thanks to me, but I’m a hidden ingredient in the farm-to-table link. What am I?

Reasons for food insecurity Riddle #2 I’m found in vodka and Volvos, and I help show the heat rise. Brazil is one of my largest producers, using sweetness to make their cars go. Canada wants to produce more of me, turning solid yellow into liquid blue. Some say I am the answer to a global problem, others say I am a cause. What am I?

Reasons for food insecurity Riddle #3 I can be hot, cold, wet, or dry, and lately I’ve gone to extremes. Humans didn’t create me, yet they have a way of making me change. Usually I’m harmless, but depending on my mood, I can be deadly. Some people don’t give me much thought, others worry I will wreak havoc in their lives. What am I?

Reasons for food insecurity Riddle #4 Some people avoid me altogether, Others consume a lot of me everyday. Some people can’t bear to think of what I used to be. I can be the first thing off the list when money is tight. A lot of resources are needed, to produce just a little bit of me. What am I?

Reasons for food insecurity Riddle #5 In the summer you might see great piles of me, but now my reserves are shrinking. Most people take me for granted, because I’ve been around longer than sliced bread. You can consume me, or consume something that consumed me first. I come in many forms, and I travel with thousands like me. What am I?

Reasons for food insecurity Riddle #6 You can’t eat me, but it’s hard to eat without me. I talk without saying a word. I can grow but I’m not alive. I make people smile, but I have no personality. Most people are happy to hold me, but I don’t feel a thing. Some make lots of me with only a little to start, but be warned: I go as easy as I come. What am I?

Diseases Related to Under Nutrition Kwashiorkor Ghanaian name for “evil spirit that affects the first child when the second is born”. Baby is weaned from breast milk as soon as the next one is born. Older baby no longer receives breast milk The first child soon becomes sick. Breast milk contains high quality proteins that support growth. Lack of protein causes the child to lose hair and colour Proteins are hormones that regulate fluid balance are now diminished. Fluid leaks of the blood and accumulates in the belly and legs. The child’s belly often bulges The liver losses its ability to clear poisons out of the body

Ways to reduce hunger in developing nations Education Teach people to help themselves because they cannot afford modern farming machinery and methods. Programs are designed to help people within the means available to them and the conditions in which they live. United Nations, government agencies and Non Government Agencies (NGO) are involved in the education process Show farmers how to improve their methods and equipment and how to increase water supply

Hunger in Canada often exists in rural Canada Why? Changes to income or support programs Declining number of jobs or wages Social programs are not as accessible as they are in urban centers More dependent on cars because they do not have access to a transit system

Ways to combat hunger in Canada Food Banks - Free access to food donated by individuals. Community Gardens - grown by community members with the produce shared amongst them. Community Kitchens - Groups of people come together to cook large quantities of food to reduce the overall costs for everyone. Government nutrition assistance programs Education Programs
