2 Managing your Research Publications Overview Why do we collect publications data? Types of publications Minerva Elements Find an Expert Social Sciences Research Network (SSRN)

3 Managing your Research Publications Why do we collect this data? The University of Melbourne annually collects data on all research publications published by staff and students affiliated with the University. The collection of accurate publications data is important because: –The University is a leading research-intensive university, results impact; ERA, citations, ranking and brand –It helps to build reliable staff research and scholarship profiles –Performance Development Reviews and Academic promotion –Informs the University’s and Melbourne Law School’s annual Research Reports.

4 Managing your Research Publications Types of Publications The University reports on HERDC type publications. There are four categories: –Authored Research Books (A1) –Chapters in Research Books (B1) –Refereed Journal Articles (C1) –Fully Written Refereed Conference Publications (F1)

5 Types of Publications The University also collects publication data that does not fall into the HERDC categories, these being non-HERDC publications. This includes: –Revised or Edited Research Books –Textbooks –Non-refereed Journal Articles –Book Reviews –Working Papers or Major Reports (eg. Research Reports) Managing your Research Publications

6 How are publications submitted? University’s central enterprise publications collection and management system.

7 Managing your Research Publications Minerva Elements Replaced Themis Publications in October 2014. Minerva Elements populates publications data to Find an Expert. Ability to deposit a version of the manuscript into Minerva Access in accordance with the Open Access Compliance program. –(eg. publication relating to an ARC project grant) Log into Minerva Elements using your University of Melbourne username and password: https://minerva-elements.unimelb.edu.au

8 Managing your Research Publications Find an Expert Searchable online resource to view University of Melbourne’s academic staff, their research and expertise. Find an Expert is currently undergoing an upgrade, redesign and development project. –Enhance the University’s publicly accessible gateway for finding information on research expertise, international connections, existing collaborations and researchers’ specific interest. –Improve search capabilities, useability and functionality. –Increase performance and provide new and improved visualisations as well as fixing a number of bugs.

9 Managing your Research Publications Social Science Research Network (SSRN) Free registration to join SSRN. Office for Research manages the MLS Legal Studies Research Paper Series distributed via SSRN. –Where possible, when a researcher posts a paper on SSRN, please notify us. We will then include the MLS cover page, reference id and include the paper in a forthcoming issue of the MLS Legal Studies Research Paper Series. This will broaden the readership of the paper. –Contains working papers and published papers in accordance with embargo periods and permissions from publishers whether this may be the accepted manuscript version or the published copyright version.
