1 Plants: Structures for Survival LEAVES Leaves catch sunlight and perform the following functions: Photosynthesis – plant makes own food. Respiration - Energy from the food (sugar) produced by plants is broken down by the plant’s cells. Energy is released. Transpiration - plants release water through the leaves into the atmosphere. What are Leaves functions? (FOOD FACTORY)

2 Plants: Structures for Survival STEMS Stems support the plant and hold the leaves up to the light. Stems also function as food storage sites. –Xylem - transports water from the roots to the leaves and other plant parts. –Phloem - transport food made in the leaves to growing parts of the plant. What are Stems functions?

3 Plants: Structures for Survival ROOTS - anchor the plant in the ground. –Absorb water/nutrients from soil. Some store food for the plants (ex. carrots). –Root hairs increase the surface area so more water and nutrients can be absorbed. Two types of roots: fibrous roots and taproots. –Fibrous roots - several main roots that branch off to form a mass of roots (ex. grass, corn, and some trees). –Taproots - one large, main root with smaller roots branching off. (ex. carrots, dandelions, or cacti). What are Roots functions?

4 Roots Find pictures of FIBROUS roots. –What plants examples have fibrous roots? –DRAW SOME INTO YOUR NOTES. Find pictures or TAP roots. –What plants have tap roots? –DRAW SOME INTO YOUR NOTES. Use your CHROMEBOOKS to find these examples.
