Question #1: Academic Transfer Education --OR-- Workforce Education

Academic Transfer Education Key Questions: Is your primary goal to obtain a bachelor's degree at a university? Do you plan on taking the "basics" at a community college so that you can transfer to a university as fast as possible? Are you already at a university and wish to take courses at a community college to transfer back to the university? About Academic Transfer Education: In Academic Transfer Education, you will be taking General Education Core Curriculum courses and some major prerequisites at the community college. The major courses of the bachelor degree will be taken in the junior and senior years at the university after completion of the associate degree.

Academic Transfer Education Degree Options: Associate of Arts (AA) Associate of Science (AS) Associate of Arts in Teaching (AAT) Other Specialty Areas Core Complete (“The Basics”) Content Area Hours Communication............... 6 Language, Philosophy, & Culture.. 3 Mathematics................... 3 Life & Physical Sciences.......... 6 Creative Arts.................. 3 American History............... 6 Government.................... 6 Social & Behavioral Sciences...... 3 Component Area Option......... 6 Total (Core Curriculum Certificate)... 42

Degree Options Associate in Arts (AA) is intended primarily for students planning on transferring to senior college or university to receive a baccalaureate degree in the following areas: communication, business, social sciences, humanities, and fine arts. Associate in Science (AS) is intended primarily for students planning on transferring to senior college or university to receive a baccalaureate degree in the following areas: computer science, engineering, health and natural sciences, or mathematics.

ASSOCIATE OF ARTS IN TEACHING (AAT) (AAT) Is a stated approved collegiate degree program consisting of lower- division courses intended for transfer to baccalaureate programs that lead to initial Texas teacher certification. The AAT degree can only be offered by Texas public community colleges and are fully transferable to any Texas public university offering baccalaureate degree programs leading to initial teacher certification.

Workforce Education Key Questions: Is your primary goal to obtain the skills to get a job as fast as possible? Do you want a short-term, up-to-date and relevant education using a workplace curriculum? Are you wanting to update your work skills or advance your career? Are you thinking about quickly changing careers? Are you thinking about transferring to the university to get a bachelor's degree but only after you have been working for awhile? About Workforce Education: The Workforce Education means that you will be taking mostly Technical Job-focused courses and a few General Education courses for the completion of your certificate or associate degree at the community college. Workforce course credit does transfer to some universities and not to others. Degree Options: Associate of Applied Science (AAS) or Certificate (C1, C2, MSA)

Associate in Applied Science The Associate in Applied Science degree is intended primarily for students whose first priority is to acquire skills and knowledge needed for employment in a specific field. To be eligible for an AAS degree from HCC, a student must successfully complete at least 60 semester hours of credit and the prescribed curriculum for a two-year career and technology education program.

MSA A Marketable Skills Achievement Award (MSA) is granted to students who complete a sequence of credit courses totaling 9-14 SCH. Credits earned in a MSA typically apply to a related HCC certificate or AAS Degree.

LEVEL I CERTIFICATE C1 Certificate can be completed by a student in one calendar year or less. It must consist of at least 15 hours and no more than 42 semester credit hours.

LEVEL II CERTIFICATE C2 must consist of at least 43 and no more than 59 semester credit hours.

ADVANCED TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE Is a certificate that has a defined associate or baccalaureate degree (or, in some circumstances, junior-level standing in a baccalaureate degree program) as a prerequisite for admission into the certificate program. It must consist of at least 16 and no more than 50 SCH. It must be focused, clearly related to the prerequisite degree, and justifiable to meet industry or external agency requirements. It is designed to provide a longer, more specialized, and advanced set of knowledge and skills in a particular area of expertise, e.g., Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

ENHANCED SKILLS CERTIFICATE Is a certificate associated with an AAS degree program. The associated AAS must be a prerequisite for the enhanced skills certificate. The certificate must be well focused, clearly related to the program, and justifiable. It must consist of at least six and no more than 15 SCH and may extend an AAS award to an overall total that shall not exceed 86 semester hours. It is intended to provide skills beyond career entry or where external mandates make it impossible for specified programs to meet the 72 SCH limit, e.g., Computed Tomography.
