2 Welcome- Only 22 days to go! Tonight’s agenda: Revised itinerary Bus count off Flight info Packing list Backpacks Rules of the Road Parent Approval & Checklist

3 Detailed Itinerary (See handout.) This includes: -Hotel info -Minor adjustments -D2 “Green Power; Making Electricity out of Air” -Dinner restaurants (pier, Chinatown, GGGrill, …)

4 College Visits General college info (College Access Plan) UCBerkeley – meet some students, Q/A, self guided tour USC- standard scheduled guided tour CalTech – meet some researchers and informal tour- hopefully some labs!

5 Let’s count off! (44 travelers) This is how we’ll take attendance on the bus each time we board so that we don’t leave anyone behind! When it’s your turn, please stand up and say your number and your name.

6 Flight details (see pg 3) Departure: Fri 2/13 (DTW  SFO) departs @ 8:40 AM Meet at DTW Delta check in @ 6:30 AM (McNamera terminal- consider carpool) Return: Sat 2/21 (LAX  DTW) arrives @ 6:55 AM Meet at luggage claim @ 7:30 AM (McNamera terminal- consider carpool)

7 At airport drop off… Travelers will need to:  check in w/chaperone  pick up their travel folders  turn in signed Parent Approval & Checklist  (optional) check baggage  Go through security w/chaperone

8 Spending $ In theory, they need NO MORE MONEY. Everything (except checked luggage) is taken care of! - EF suggests that students have $30-50/day to spend. - Think about what you’d like to buy before you travel. -Think about how you should budget and track your money before you travel. -Pack an empty water bottle and snacks. Save $! - Save and pocket extra lunch $, too?

9 Medications/Special needs Please touch base with us before your leave TONIGHT if there’s a traveler medical condition/need that we have NOT YET discussed. Pack all prescription meds in labeled original container in backpack. Travelers should tell their roommates and staff member where the meds are and how to administer.

10 Packing List (See handout.) All travelers will have: -EF backpacks as “personal item” -a Carry-on (free) OR -a checked bag (Delta )charge *Be sure to pack light! You will be lugging around your luggage all trip. * If you can pack all your belongings in one carry-on AND the EF backpack (as a “personal item”) you’ll save Delta luggage fees! * All carry on liquids (not checked) must be 3 ounces of less and all fit into a quart-sized Ziploc bag.

11 Backpacks Looking good! Everyone have one? This will serve as your “personal item” on the plane & your day pack on the trip each day. Make sure you have a luggage tag and that yours is personalized before the trip.

12 I AM AWESOME. Why, yes you are! And here’s a visual and physical reminder of that fact.

13 Group Travel Reminders: Smile & laugh. Lots. Eat. Well. Sleep. Whenever you can. Be patient and punctual. Be positive and generous to yourself and others because you are AWESOME, and can afford to be. Keep an eye on your fellow travelers. If you (or someone else) needs something, please communicate it right away. Thank you!

14 Rules of the Road See the page titled: “KNOW BEFORE YOU GO”. *All activities are for all travelers. *Hotel rooms- gender specific & stay that way *Hotel noise levels down… go to sleep!

15 Tech Policy You have worked hard paid a lot of money to go on this trip! Don’t miss any of it by being plugged in.  Headphones and tech need to be put away: -When tour director/chaperone addresses group -During group activities. (Be respectful to others at meals, please!)

16 Communication while on tour Daily Email Updates -Watch for them!
