3 Vocabulary Words NAACP: Nation Association for the Advancement of Colored People Militant: fighting or warring Muslim: a believer in Islam (a religion) Boycott: a protest against a company or establishment Mecca: the holy city of Islam located in Saudi Arabia Bias: prejudice or discrimination

4 The History of Black History Month Black History Month first originated as “negro week” and then to black history month after 1926. Before that, African Americans were absent from the history books.

5 Why February? Feb 23, 1868- W.E.B DuBois was born Feb 3, 1870- 15th amendment was pass giving blacks the right to vote Feb 12, 1909 NAACP was founded in NYC Feb 25, 1879- First black senator, Revels took his oath of office. February 21, 1965 : Malcolm X, the militant leader who promoted Black Nationalism, was shot to death by three Black Muslims.

6 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Born in Georgia and graduated from Morehouse College. King was significant in the Civil Rights Movement. He led a major boycott, organized the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and in 1963 he led a March On Washington and gave the infamous “I Have a Dream Speech.” Dr. King was shot and killed on April 4, 1968.

7 Malcolm X Malcolm X "A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything." Born May 19, 1925 in Nebraska. In 1946, Malcolm began to study the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm was appointed as a minister and national spokesman for the Nation of Islam. He returned to the United States from Mecca.. This time when Malcolm spoke, instead of just preaching to African-Americans, he had a message for all races. On June 29, 1963 Malcolm lead the Unity Rally in Harlem. It was one of the nations largest civil rights events. February 21, 1965 three gunmen rushed Malcolm onstage. They shot him 15 times at close range.

9 Rosa Parks Rosa Parks was born in Alabama on February 4, 1913. She married in 1932 and in 1943 she became active in the Civil Rights Movement. On December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks began the Montgomery Bus Boycott by refusing to give her seat to a white person. Rosa Parks died in her home at the age of 92 on October 24, 2005.

10 Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman was born a slave around 1820 in Maryland. In 1844 she married a free black man named John Tubman. In 1849 she ran away. She made trips back and forth between the North and South via the Underground Railroad helping other slaves escape. On her third return she found her husband had found another wife. She became friends with the leading abolitionists. During the Civil war she worked for the union as a cook, nurse and spy. After the war, she lived in Auburn,NY were she would die in 1913.
