Natural Selection and evolution Changes over generations

What we are learning today 1.Natural Selection and evolution pre quiz 2.What is the link between a T-rex and a Crow?

Pre Quiz 1. In one sentence explain what evolution means 2. What does adaption mean in the context of evolution? 3. What can the fossil record tell us about evolution? 4. Who proposed the theory of evolution? 5. What does natural selection mean?

Birds and Dinosaurs Some scientists believe that modern day birds evolved from a branch of dinosaurs called theropods. This branch includes the T-rex!!! Can you spot the similarities?

Evolution Using the fossil period scientists can observe gradual changes in organisms over time. These change seem to indicate that lobed finned fish evolved into amphibians.

Structure and Relationships Scientist originally thought that if animals looked similar to each other then they must have evolved from the same ancestor. After the discovery of genetics they found that animals looked similar had the same genes. This shows they must share the same ancestor. Scientist have also found ‘Hox’ genes. These genes carry information such as where the head is located. They can can be transplanted from a chicken to a fly and still function correctly.

Activity book 3.1 – Vertebrae and Limbs Do activity book 3.1 – 10 minutes Check answers.
