Year 10 Biology 2014 NATURAL SELECTION & EVOLUTION

Evolution: genetic change in the characteristics of a species over many generations, resulting in the formation of a new species Generation: the time between the birth of an individual and when that individual produces its own offspring EVOLUTION

Fossil evidence is used to support the Theory of Evolution as the gradual change in genes results in the gradual change in characteristics Therefore the fossils that are uncovered and then dated can provide the evidence of common ancestors and the time of divergence. FOSSILS

Despite dissimilar functions, all vertebrate forelimbs contain the same sets of bones – this strongly suggests common descent. Structures that are similar because they are inherited from a common ancestor are homologous structures. Analogous structures are structures used for the same purpose but are not due to a common ancestor. ANATOMICAL EVIDENCE

BONES OF VERTEBRATE FORELIMBS

Explain why the fins of a dolphin and fins of a shark are Analogous structures not Homologous structures. SHARK & DOLPHIN
