2 What Is Health Sciences? Health Science includes the study of medicine, nutrition, and other health-related topics and how they affect both humans and animals. Health Science encompasses a variety of sub-disciplines, all of which relate to the application of science to health.

Health Science research helps to treat and prevent illnesses/diseases Development of new vaccines and antibiotics Evaluation of medications Creation of new approaches to therapy and treatments Ensures adequate health and wellness of patients and of today’s society through: Medication/Vaccinations Physical Activity Proper Nutrition

6 What Is Nutrition? In science and human medicine, nutrition is the science or practice of consuming and utilizing foods. "nutritional science investigates the metabolic and physiological responses of the body to diet“ Focuses on how diseases, conditions and problems can be prevented or lessened with a healthy diet. Nutrition also involves identifying how certain diseases, conditions or problems may be caused by dietary factors and lifestyle factors

12 Human Nutrition & Foods at WVU Mission To provide a high-quality undergraduate didactic program in dietetics Prepare students for entry-level positions in foods and nutritional science, food service management, and clinical and community nutrition Nationally accredited by Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics Meets the academic requirements for membership in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

13 HNF Program Overview Undergraduate Programs: BS in Human Nutrition and Foods BS in Agriculture with Human Nutrition and Foods emphasis Curriculum: The degree requires the completion of a minimum of 128 credit hours. Specific areas of study in the HN&F curriculum include Nutrition, Food Science, Physiology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry. Other courses include: Accounting, Economics, Physics, Sociology, and Statistics.

14 HNF On Campus & in the Community Community Outreach Provides excellent on-site experience Volunteer opportunities at WIC, The Shack Neighborhood House, Meals on Wheels, WVU Hospitals, etc. Undergraduate Internship (HNF 495) Work closely with faculty and current Dietetic Interns Provides excellent field-related experience Course credit

16 Using Your HNF Degree Graduation DPD Verification Statement Issued by Program Director after verification of program curriculum completion Completion of all Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) requirements

17 Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) Computerized Exam Over 250 approved test sites nationwide Minimum: 110 questions, Maximum: 130 questions 3 hours: 2 ½ for exam, 30 minutes for introduction Immediate score reports Retesting available 45 days after previous test date DTR Employment Work with RDs in a variety of employment settings Hospitals, health-care facilities, community and public health settings, etc. Using Your HNF Degree

18 Dietetic Internships Dietetic Internship (DI) Supervised-practice experiences in real-life work settings Required in order to take the RD Exam Competitive on-line matching process (DICAS) Using Your HNF Degree

19 WVU Graduate Dietetic Internship (GDI) DICAS on-line matching program AND application to the graduate school 2-year combined Masters/Dietetic Internship Program Graduate coursework/Supervised practice experience Thesis and Non-thesis options Individualized Supervised Practice Pathway (ISPP) Graduates who did not match to a DI ISPP application & DICAS application RD Exam upon completion Using Your HNF Degree

20 Registered Dietitian RD Exam Computerized exam Minimum: 125 questions, Maximum: 145 questions Must have completed a Dietetic Internship Study Guide for the Registration Examination for Dietitians Re-testing 45 days after previous exam RD Employment Hospitals Sports Nutrition Corporate Wellness programs Government Private practice Community and public health settings Universities Using Your HNF Degree

21 CDR Board Certificates Board Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition RD Status for a minimum of 2 years Completed 2,000 hours of practice as an RD in the specialty within the last 5 years Passed certification exam Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics RD Status for a minimum of 2 years Completed 1,500 hours of practice in the specialty are within the last 5 years Passed certification exam

22 Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition RD Status for a minimum of 2 years Completed 2,000 hours of practice as an RD in the specialty within the last 5 years Passed certification exam Board Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition RD Status for a minimum of 2 years Completed 2,000 hours of practice as an RD in the specialty within the last 5 years Passed certification exam CDR Board Certificates
