What would happen if every state in the U.S. was an independent, sovereign nation? Describe the problems and/ or benefits. Discuss with a partner

Would most Americans support the idea of a “United States of North America” by politically uniting with Canada and Mexico into one single nation? Why/ why not? Discuss with a partner United States of North America?

The United States of Europe? Discuss with a partner Describe the possible economic/ political benefits if the numerous nations that make up the European continent united to form one nation.

CULTURAL DIFFERENCES WITHIN EUROPE

Nationalism: the belief that people should be loyal to their nation, the people with whom they share land, culture, and history. NATIONALISM

Nationalistic rivalries between European nations led to WWI and WWII.

In the wake of World War II, two goals emerged among the various European nations: 1. Rebuild the shattered economies of European nations. 2. Prevent future conflicts (wars) between European nations.

Some argued that the people of Europe needed to see themselves simply as “Europeans” However, most Europeans were not ready to completely give up their national identities and unify into a large, single European nation

Many open to European “cooperation”

In the 1950s, six European countries began the process of economic cooperation by forming the European Economic Community (EEC ).

Promoted “free trade” by removing trade barriers on import goods, like tariffs (taxes on imported goods). The European Economic Community (1957)

Allowed people to live and work in any member country. The European Economic Community (1957) EXAMPLE: A “French” citizen could live in Belgium and work in Germany.

The European Economic Community was so economically successful that between 1958 and 1967 trade among these member nations quadrupled

Names Changes

Beginning in 1973, the European Union (the EU) began to admit other European nations.

CRITERIA FOR EUROPEAN UNION MEMBERSHIP

1) Countries must be “European”.

CRITERIA FOR EUROPEAN UNION MEMBERSHIP 2) Countries must be democratic (Democracy). No totalitarian governments allowed!

CRITERIA FOR EUROPEAN UNION MEMBERSHIP 3) Countries must have free-market economies/ “mixed economies”. No “command economies” allowed!

The European Union is not a “nation”, like the United States of America The European Union The United States of America

An international organization that is planned and controlled by a group of nations; the political powers of the EU are negotiated between member nations. The European Union is a “supranational” organization.

The countries that makeup the European Union “pool” their political power together in order to gain a strength and influence none of them could have on its own. “There is strength in numbers”

ADDITIONAL STEPS TOWARDS UNIFICATION Historically, each European country had its own currency.

ADDITIONAL STEPS TOWARDS UNIFICATION The “Euro” became the common currency used by EU members.

ADVANTAGES OF USING A COMMON CURRENCY Greater travel/ trade convenience- no more exchanging currencies.

Arguments Against Joining the European Union Political Concerns Debate over how much control individual nations should give up to EU policy makers The European Parliament is elected every five years by EU citizens. The laws passed by the European Parliament apply to all EU member nations.

Arguments Against Joining the European Union Demographic Concerns Many Europeans are worried that workers from “less prosperous” European nations may move to the areas of Europe with higher wages, creating huge shifts in national populations.
