3 Factors that Encourage Settlement These physical features affect where people settle:  Climate  Soil  Water  Landforms

4 When Native Americans began to farm, they settled in areas where the soil was rich. Later, settlers moved to places where there was farmland and fresh water People needed to live near transportation routes such as rivers

5 Turn & Talk Why would people need to live near transportation routes?

6 Read page 41 – 2 nd column aloud then answer the question on the following slide

7 COMPARE & CONTRAST How do different climates encourage and discourage settlement?

8 Independent Practice Use pages 17,24,32 & 38  Think back to what we learned about the region in which we live – the Northeast region.  Would the climate, landforms, soil, bodies of water and vegetation of our community been encouraging or challenging to new settlers? Explain your answers using text evidence
