6 6th Grade Mathematics SIXTHGRADEMATHEMATICssSIXTHGRADEMATHEMATICss MATHEMATICSMATHEMATICS - In sixth grade mathematics, the focus is on the study of whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Students explore how math is used to represent real-life situations and solve problems. Sixth graders use ratios to compare sets of data and learn about the relationships between fractions, decimals, and percents. They are also introduced to integers. Geometry and measurement are explored through the study of quadrilaterals and different measurement systems. Students will collect, analyze, display, and interpret data in a variety of ways. Additionally, students learn to find the probability of an event and investigate different types of patterns. The language of algebra is introduced and students learn to solve simple equations. The sixth grade curriculum provides the foundation for higher-level mathematical thinking. 5

10 6th grade students in Art class focus on the basic art vocabulary by studying the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. During each unit students talk about the quality and the value of art (Art Criticism and Aesthetics) and evaluate art (Judgment). Art history studies focus on Realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, American Art styles between 1877 and the present time. Art production is broken into several units. Our drawing units include working with gesture lines and sketching proportionate human body, shading, and 1 point perspective. During the painting unit we review color mixing, the colors of the color wheel and using complementary and analogous color schemes. Students have separate units focusing on printmaking, creating a collage (or mixed media), making a kinetic sculpture from clay, and working with fiber art with focus on fabric painting or batik, and creating digital art by using computer graphics and computer generated text. 6th Grade Art ARTART 9  The elements of art and the principles of design; typography, and composition  Drawing skills and learn how to capture light and shadow using graphite and colored pencil  Color through different painting techniques and styles in watercolor and acrylic  Combine multiple collage techniques;  Textile art - weaving  Sculpting techniques in one media; Art criticism and aesthetics  Subtractive printmaking  3 point perspective drawing Strands or Objectives

14 In Middle School Orchestra, students are taught the fundamentals of playing an instrument in the string family: violin, viola, cello or bass. In the "Beginning" phase, attention is focused on the fundamentals of posture, position, quality tone production and essential music reading skills. These same concepts are refined at the "Intermediate" level as students learn to read and perform more advanced ensemble literature. The "Advanced" instrumental student in middle school will continue to gain skills and techniques which will enable him/her to play in a higher level performance group. Thru all levels, instruction is devoted to the "team" aspect of playing in a performance ensemble, as well as the joy of making music to the best of our ability. All 8th grade Orchestra students will participate in a "District Orchestra Assessment". Students completing 8th grade Orchestra are prepared for the high school level of orchestra performance should they elect to continue playing their chosen instrument. 17 6th Grade Technical Education TECHNICALEDUCATIONTECHNICALEDUCATION The GVMS Gateway to Technology (GTT) program addresses the curiosity and energy of GVMS middle school students while incorporating national standards in mathematics, science, and technology. This STEM activity- oriented, cutting-edge program shows students how technology is used in engineering to solve everyday problems. During the GTT experience, students will gain the skills they need to develop, produce, and use products and services. The Gateway to Technology curriculum provides project-based learning – a hands-on approach – that is exciting and challenging for the full range of students in Technology Education classrooms. The curriculum relates technology to students’ daily lives. It promotes communication and collaboration by emphasizing a teaming approach in the instructional units. This approach utilizes the strengths of each team member to accomplish the goals of the project while offering students learning challenges at all ability levels. 16  D evelop and Demonstrate Workplace Readiness Skills … Personal Qualities and People Skills  D emonstrate critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.  D escribe the interrelationship among science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  D escribe the role engineers play in the invention and innovation of products and new technologies.  D escribe the effects of technology on society.  C ompare invention and innovation.  D escribe the benefits of following the design process.  S olve a technical problem, using the design process.  D emonstrate proficiency with a variety of measuring devices, scales, and systems (e.g., English, metric).  S ketch two- and three-dimensional shapes, using visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric shapes.  P roduce a three-dimensional (3D) model of an object.  D esign CADD-modeled parts with geometric and dimension constraints.  C omplete a design brief that adheres to the constraints for an existing design problem.
