1 Presentation Orcon HRC 300 and 400
High efficiency heat recovery Revolution part I: Orcon believes to have created more than an evolution with their new HRC. Given that this unit is armed with all new technical features we even dare to speak of a revolution! During this meeting we will do our best to convince you of this

2 The development has been focused on 2 major issues:
Advanced simplicity of installation Advanced higher comfort for the end user The development has been focused on 2 major issues: advanced simplicity of installation advanced higher comfort for the end user

3 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Meet the HRC! This abbreviation stands for “High Efficiency heat recovery Complete version”. There also is a second model, which is called the HRV. This stands for the “Alternative” model. This alternative is equipped with the same Constant Flow motors and electronics as the HRC, but it does not have some of the “goodies” like by-pass, filter control et cetera.

4 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Easy wall mounting frame: The right base to connect all the ducts The HRC is made up of 3 major parts. In the first place there is the wall mounting frame. This frame is important for many reasons: It offers the right base to connect all the ducts

5 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Easy wall mounting frame The right base to connect all the ducts The body weights less than 25 kg, one man can do the job Because of the spliced construction, the high-tech interior body can be fitted afterwards, this offers important advantages: The body weighs less than 25kg, one man can do the job The body is fully operational and therefore it can easily be tested outside the frame in case of technical service or maintenance

6 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Easy mounting thanks to the mounting frame: Installer and electrician will find clear indications where they have to install condensate evacuate pipe and power supply. Furthermore the plumber and the electrician will find clear indications about where they have to install the condensate evacuation pipe and the power supply.

7 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Easy mounting thanks to the mounting frame: Separate delivery, so less chances for thieves. It can be delivered separately to the site, which is a much lower risk than a complete unit, because the cost is much lower.

8 Advanced simplicity of installation:
People think easier in two dimensions: The connections are 2-directional by turning the elbow ducts People think easier in 2 dimensions: All ducts are leaving the unit in one surface The connections are 2 directional by turning the elbow ducts

12 Advanced simplicity of installation:
People think easier in two dimensions: Thanks to the “one surface” departure of the duct you do not loose any valuable pressure in extra elbow ducts. Other competitors need extra elbow ducts to fix the duct rigidly to the wall. Thanks to the “one surface” departure of the ducts, you do not loose any valuable pressure in extra elbow ducts. Other competitors need these extra elbows to fix the ducts rigidly to the wall.

13 Advanced simplicity of installation:
People think easier in two dimensions: Eventual silencers can easily be mounted rigidly against the wall next to the unit. Because of the immediate departure parallel to the wall, silencers can easily be mounted rigidly against the wall next to the unit.

14 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Left or right ? You can see it the best in place of the building: Because of the dual ducting system needed on a heat recovery unit, you also have a left-hand and a right-hand version. Not with Orcon! Thanks to the very practical left/right module, you can define the universal Orcon unit on site into a left or a right configuration.

22 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Left or right ? You can see it the best in place of the building: The configuration is simple to recognise thanks to the “house” and “tree” icons , their location also indicates the type of duct to be connected at that side. In the module 2 magnets are mounted, the electronics receive a “north” or a “south” signal and configuration is done immediately. The temperature sensors (4) are switched following their function and location. The humidity sensor remains on its spot but it measures the right connection thanks to an ingenious small duct on the left/right module.

23 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Left or right ? You can see it the best in place of the building: Left-right is also possible thanks to the smart water seal Left or right is not only a thing of sensors and electronics, also the condensate water will evacuate from another part inside the unit. Thanks to the pressure neutralising water seal the installer has no extra job. Once it is filled with water, the air is shut off and the pressure is maintained.

24 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Left or right ? You can see it the best in place of the building: The water seal offers easy access for maintenance The water seal offers easy access for maintenance. Thanks to a spring support, it is pressed against the bottom of the unit. By retrieving the spring, the part can be removed and it opens into 2 parts for cleaning.

25 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Left or right ? You can see it the best in place of the building: The pressure balancing is done by 2 pipes submerged in a small water tank The pressure balancing is done by 2 pipes, submerged in a small water tank. The level in the water tank has a maximum, which is defined by an overflow. Behind this overflow the pressure is 0. Nevertheless the installer has to install a second siphon to prevent unpleasant smells escaping from the domestic drain system.

26 Advanced simplicity of installation:
Left or right? You can see it the best in place of the building: The illustration shows an over- and under pressure. In our application there is only under pressure. The illustration shows an over- and underpressure, in our application there only is underpressure above the 2 pipes.

27 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
By the use of one 3 step switch, the unit is fully controlled: Night, day en cooking Advanced higher comfort for the end user: By the use of a simple 3 position switch, the unit is fully controlled: Night Day Cook, is not to be misunderstood, the connection to a cooking hood is not preferable. It has to be separated. This switch is based on active 230V signals on the medium or high speed connection, if none of the above mentioned signals is present, the unit switches to low speed.

28 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
With only one 3 step switch optimal comfort : Automatic shower recognition The unit recognises the activation of a shower. Thanks to the humidity sensor, the unit measures and memorises each minute the relative humidity of the hot air leaving the house. This value is compared to the value that was measured 3 minutes earlier, if there is a difference of more then 5%, the shower scenario will be activated.

29 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
With only one 3 step switch optimal comfort : Automatic shower recognition The unit will automatically switch to 1 speed higher during 30 minutes (can be set to 60 minutes also) after which it will return to its previous setting.

Standard fit with filter warning: Filter timer On the front you will find an indicator and a push button. One of the functions is to draw the attention to the cleaning of the filter. After 3 months of working, the light will start flashing.

32 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Standard fit with filter warning: Reset by one push on the button Just press the button to reset the timer. That is after you have cleaned the filters of course. But if you think you can play a trick, wrong bet!

33 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Easily, with no air leak, filter maintenance: 1 door gives fully entrance. Filter maintenance can be done easily thanks to the air sealed door. A simple twist of the 2 screws unlocks the door.

34 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Easily, with no air leak, filter maintenance: 1 door gives fully entrance. Both filters are equal; they are mounted the othe way round. The filters have an extremely big surface, compared to some of the competitors. The advantage of this is important, since easier airflow requires less energy.

35 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Easily, with no air leak, filter maintenance: Optional to be changed by a pollen filter The HRC can be equipped with a optional pollen filter. The opening is multifunctional and can be used for both filter types.

36 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
With only one 3 step switch optimal comfort: Bio-rhythm The HRC continually measures the aspirated outdoor air. By doing this, the unit is able to detect tendencies. The graph shows a random 24h temperature curve. Theoretically the coldest moment of day is situated somewhere in the early morning. Just pointing out this coldest moment would not do the trick in an accurate way.

37 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
With only one 3 step switch optimal comfort: Bio-rhythm By using some extra algorithms, the HRC is able to define the time up to +/- 1h accurately. After 1 day the first results are ready and after 5 days it will take at least 3 consecutive days of identical wrong behaviour before the algorithm will start changing its internal time settings. This biorhythm comes in very handy to adapt its decisions to its habitants, as we will see very soon...

38 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Intelligent defrost cycle: The intelligent de-ice scenario: As we all know, the thermal exchange of warm and cold air generates some physical reactions. Most of them do not generate a real inconvenience, only one of them does: ice! The thermal exchange of warm and cold air generates some physical reactions

39 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Intelligent defrost cycle: Cold air causes condensate at the warm and humid side. If we look at the basics of thermodynamics, we meet the forming of condensate in the heat exchanger. This is caused by the effect of warm humid air cooling down because of contact with the cold air from outside. Because of this phenomenon the heat exchanger will generate condense water dripping out during certain combinations of temperature and humidity. There is a drain pan and condensate evacuation for this purpose mounted inside the unit.

40 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Intelligent defrost cycle: Extreme cold air causes frost at the exhaust of the warm humid air If the outdoor temperature drops even further, the condensate water in certain areas will start freezing up as ice, blocking the way. Ice will not damage the heat exchanger and some ice formation will not have a big effect on the results of the heat exchanger. Nevertheless it is necessary to assure good ventilation, too much ice prevents this.

41 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Intelligent defrost cycle: A high humidity of the warm inside air decreases ice production. If in certain conditions, the humidity of the indoor air rises, it is possible to push the ice forming out of the heat exchanger. Humidity plays a very important role in the heat balance of the HRC.

42 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Intelligent defrost cycle: A low humidity of the warm inside air causes rime against the plates of the exchanger. When the indoor humidity drops to a very low level, another phenomenon takes place: the indoor air is not humid enough to create ice that blocks the heat exchanger.

43 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Intelligent defrost cycle: Rime grow evolves much slower than ice grow It is a slight rime formation that can continue for hours.

44 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Intelligent defrost cycle: If we resume, we come to the conclusion that some information is vital to understand what happens inside the heat exchanger: Outdoor air temperature Indoor air temperature Indoor air humidity Temperature of indoor air leaving the heat exchanger By combining this information, it is possible to calculate the time needed before the heat exchanger has formed about 20% ice.

45 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
By combining this information, it is possible to calculate the time that is needed before the heat exchanger has formed about 20% ice. If we then also use the biorhythm to estimate how far away the coldest point of day is, it is possible to get through the night without a de-ice cycle. Practically the unit will use the leaving temperature of the heat exchanger to trigger the scenario, lower than +2°c starts the calculations. If the scenario started before 20h00 the unit will de-ice before night comes since the situation is more efficient. In many cases the unit will defrost spontaneously when temperature rises again in the morning.

46 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Intelligent defrost cycle: Less defrost cycles = more comfort. You might wonder if the negative energy cumulated in the ice isn’t more then what is won by continuing the airflow, We ordered a study on this subject witch proves that even in the most bad situation (extreme ice formation) continuing is at least 8% more efficient then stopping one fan to defrost every time the leaving temperature goes beneath +2°C. When rime is forming, this is always when indoor humidity is low, mainly because outside temperature is low. The temperature of the leaving air will be extremely low, in other words: the unit is at its best, don’t stop it. If the outdoor temperature stays negative for more then 5 days, the unit will organise a defrost anyway during 1 h, around 15h00 in the afternoon since that is most lightly the warmest moment outside in winter.

47 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Intelligent defrost cycle: Thanks to the bio-rhythm no improper actions: the unit recognizes day and night and takes the right decisions. Defrost cycles will maximal be forwarded or delayed during the night. Thanks to the biorhythm the unit will recognise night. Defrost cycles are being moved as much as possible earlier or later then night.

48 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Proportional bypass: Fully automatic = more comfort The HRC is equipped with a proportional by-pass. During the summer it is unpleasant to have the fresher night air coming in heated up by the warmer inside air leaving the house. Therefore the unit will check if this situation is present. If so the valve will be opened and takes away one of both airflow's of the heat exchanger. As a result of this, no air will be warmed up. Two conditions have to be fulfilled: Leaving air from the house must be higher than 23°C

49 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Proportional bypass: Fully automatic = more comfort During daytime, temperature has to be +18°C or more for at least 8h

50 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
When the valve is opened, the temperature will be regulated as close as possible to +14°C. If lower: the valve closes step by step (per 3%). If higher: the valve opens step by step (per 3%)

51 Advanced higher comfort for the end user

55 Advanced higher comfort for the end user
Proportional bypass: Bypass air also filtered The air passing through the by-pass is also filtered, seems obvious but not always the case with other appliances.

56 Advanced simplicity of servicing:
EBM-papst EC Constant-flow motors. No clock to adjust for Bio-rhythm: fully automatic, after 24 h first actions started. Adjusting a unit is fun, if you have nothing else to do, that is! Constant flow motors need no adjustment Automatic calibration for the filter detection takes about 150sec and is started with a simple push on the button No clock to be adjusted: biorhythm does this automatically
