The Functions of Stage Lighting ► Selective Visibility ► Composition ► Revelation of Form ► Establishing Mood (Atmosphere) ► Reinforcing the Theme

The Functions of Stage Lighting: Selective Visibility Simply put: “To see what should be seen” Visibility cannot be defined as a fixed degree of brightness or an established angle of distribution In order to hear an actor, you must first be able to see an actor.

The Functions of Stage Lighting: Composition More than any other design element, light is able to direct the audience’s eye and control what is and what is not seen. Compositional lighting means lighting one form and not another, controlling shadows, lighting 3-D forms to look 3-D, and lighting the actor.

The Functions of Stage Lighting: Selective Visibility + Composition

The Functions of Stage Lighting: Revelation of Form Altering form is one of light’s greatest powers.

The Functions of Stage Lighting: Establishing the Mood (Atmosphere) The feel of the play dictates the mood. Mood is achieved through color, intensity, and distribution of light. 2 Important Facts Concerning Mood: 1. Mood and Atmosphere are unavoidable features of light, and to ignore that fact is as dangerous as overstating the mood. 2. Mood is only one of five equally important functions of stage lighting; to short any one for another must be a conscious decision made by the entire design team and director.

The Functions of Stage Lighting: Establishing the Mood (Atmosphere)

The Functions of Stage Lighting: Reinforcing the Theme The lighting of a scene must support the action. If the lighting does not enhance the performance – something has been done WRONG.

The Functions of Stage Lighting: Reinforcing the Theme
