Tech Director’s Notebook Intro. Project

Set Design 0 For this part of the project you will design a set for your one act play you read. 0 Knowing the things you learned from reading and analyzing the script yesterday, select one set that is required of your show. 0 Some of you have one location. Some of you have multiple locations. If that is the case, choose one location in your show to do a design.

3 Types of Set Designs 0 Bird’s Eye / Ground Plan- gives designers a “to-scale” reference to know exactly how big things are, where they will be placed on the stage, and how much room there is to use for actors to move around. 0 This is exact measurement. 0 This is in black and white (pencil), no color. 0 Lines and shapes.

Rendering 0 This is what the set will look like from an audience’s perspective. 0 Shows colors, textures, size, depth. 0 Full color 0 As if you were sitting in the audience and took a picture of the set.

3-D Model - Shoe Box Model 0 3- Dimensional 0 Ground Plan and Rendering comes to life 0 Color, textures, patterns, to scale 0 You will need to bring in an old shoe box for this.

Make-Up Design 0 You must have 2 different make-up designs. 0 Fanciful, Animal, Cuts and Bruises, Old Age, or Basic Corrective This can be two different designs for 1 character, OR 1 design each for 2 different characters Flesh tone must also be used. No one is COPY PAPER WHITE (except a mime).

Light Cue Sheet 0 Cue #- starts with 1 and goes through whatever number of however many cues you have in your design. 0 Blackouts count as cues as well. 0 Desired look- What look are you trying to create? Eerie night time? Angry sunset? Bright sunny day? Single spot light on Stage Left? Page #- What page does the look happen on Cue line- What is the line and character who speaks the line the light look happens on? Notes- any special things you want to convey about the cue/ look? Does it fade up or out slowly? Is it a quick on or off?

Props Design 0 Make a list of all props (things an actor handles other than set or costumes) in your show 0 What act (1,2,or 3) and scene (1,2,3,etc.) is the prop used in 0 Description- is it old? Brand new and very nice condition? Who uses it?

Sound Design 0 What music and sound effects are needed in your show? 0 What music will you use to set up the mood of the show when the audience is entering? 0 What song will capture the theme of the play at the very end that you can use for a curtain call/ bows? 0 Number- Cue number (start with 1, and go for as many cues as you need for your show in order of the script) 0 Page- page number the cue happens on 0 Cue line- who says it and what is said right before it happens 0 Desired effect- description of the cue (door bell, glass shattering, gun shot, song is played, etc.) 0 You must also find a song to use for the curtain call and write that on the back of your cue sheet 0 Make a playlist for pre-show of 5 songs that will help set the mood/ characters for the audience as they enter.
