Let’s Activate Our Brains Look at the word below. What does it make you think of? What do you know? OCEAN

Let’s Take a Look What ocean is located at Georgia’s southeastern border? Atlantic Ocean How many miles do you think our coastline is? 100 miles

Off the Georgia Coast Off the coast of Georgia are the Barrier Islands. A barrier island is a sandy strip of land offshore that protects the mainland. Barrier islands block damaging winds and ocean waves from Georgia’s estuaries, salt marshes, and the mainland. Without them, wind and water would wash away sand and soil from the coast. They are also called “The Golden Isles”.

“Golden Isle” Trivia Cumberland Island is known for its wild horses. Ancient Indians named Tybee Island “Salt”. Ossabaw was named by the Creek and Muscogean Indians for the leaves of a yaupon holly that would induce vomiting. Spanish Explorers were the first to claim Jekyll Island in 1510 and called it “Whale Island”. created by www.teachingr4real.com

Georgia’s Ocean Habitat Let’s look at Salt Water Marshes What is it? Coastal Wetland rich in marine life How are they formed? They are formed from the sediment, sand, and soil brought down by the rivers. created by www.teachingr4real.com

Plants of the Salt Marshes Cordgrass The root structure actually grows horizontally (sideways). This root systems slows down erosion and holds the marsh together. It also protects them from freezes and fire. created by www.teachingr4real.com

More on Salt Marshes… Take a look at these animals. The salt marshes help feed them. Can you identify them? Small fish clams shrimp oysters plankton crabs

Georgia’s Beaches True or False? Georgia’s beaches have more sea shells than other beaches along the Atlantic Coast? False. It actually has less than many other beaches. Sapello Island created by www.teachingr4real.com

Sand Dunes Sand dunes are mounds of sand formed by wind and moving water. They are a result of the process of deposition, in which the sand is deposited, or dropped there. created by www.teachingr4real.com

Life on the Sand Dunes Plants that live on sand dunes serve a very important purpose! Do you know what it is? Morning Glory Pennywort created by www.teachingr4real.com Sea Oats Sea Oats have shallow roots that help trap the sand and hold it in place against constant winds. Sand dunes are very easily destroyed, but sea oats can help keep them together!

Gray’s Reef Gray’s Reef is off the coast of Georgia, and is the largest near-shore live bottom reef! created by www.teachingr4real.com

Georgia’s Sea Turtles Watch a video clip of baby turtles hatching. Click here to view different species of Georgia turtles. Click here to watch. created by www.teachingr4real.com

More On Turtles… The loggerhead turtle is the most commonly seen turtle on the Georgia Coast. It is considered endangered in many places. How many eggs do you think the female turtle will lay? about 120 After watching the video, what happens once the baby turtles hatch? They find their own way back into the ocean. There are two main reasons why many sea turtle babies don’t survive. One of the reasons is that baby sea turtles often mistake street lights for the moon and head towards busy roads instead of heading to the ocean. After watching the video, can you think of the other reason? Many predators like to eat baby turtles. created by www.teachingr4real.com

Save the Whales! This whale comes to the coast of Georgia to have its babies (calves). It is our state marine mammal. Do you know its name? Northern Right Whale created by www.teachingr4real.com

Did you know? The Northern Right Whale is the most endangered of the large whales in the world. It was named the “right” whale because whale hunters considered it the right whale to hunt since it was so easy to catch. created by www.teachingr4real.com

More On Whales How large does a Northern Right Whale get? 45-55 feet How much do they weigh? 70 tons Who is bigger? Males or Females? Females How many teeth do they have? none created by www.teachingr4real.com

The Pelican The pelican is a marine bird that lives along the Georgia coast. Do you know what adaptation helps this bird survive in it’s habitat? The pelican has a long wide bill with a pouch that allows it to scoop up fish from the water to eat. Click the picture for a video about Pelicans!
