2 Respiratory Care Makes a Difference At 9:32 am, Lori Moreno brought a newborn baby struggling to breathe back to life… What have you accomplished today?  Lori is a recent graduate of a respiratory therapist educational program.  Programs like the one Lori attended are available at colleges and universities throughout the U.S.  Edison College’s Respiratory Care Program was established in 1984

6 The Respiratory Care Profession  The Profession has developed for the last 60 years  Diagnostic and Therapeutic Intervention for the Treatment of Respiratory Diseases, Trauma, Surgery and Emergency Intervention for the Cardio Respiratory System  Respiratory Disease is the 4th Leading cause for Hospitalization or Intervention

7 What do R.T.’s Do?  Diagnosing lung and breathing disorders and recommending treatment methods.  Interviewing patients and doing chest physical exams to determine what kind of therapy is best for their condition.  Consulting with physicians to recommend a change in therapy, based on your evaluation of the patient.  Analyzing breath, tissue, and blood specimens to determine levels of oxygen and other gases.  Managing ventilators and artificial airway devices for patients who can’t breathe normally on their own.  Responding to Code Blue or other urgent calls for care.  Educating patients and families about lung disease so they can maximize their recovery.

11 Respiratory Care Program Edison College  Associate in Science degree  76 total semester credit hours  31 general education credit hours BSC 1080 is the only Pre-Requisite BSC 1080 is the only Pre-Requisite  45 core RC (RET) credit hours  Lecture & laboratory courses at the Lee County campus  Clinic in 12 Southwest Florida Hospitals

12 Respiratory Care Program  Begins each Fall Semester  Six semesters (22 Months)  First year general education Merged with: Four core courses and Clinic I in Fall, Spring and Summer A terms Merged with: Four core courses and Clinic I in Fall, Spring and Summer A terms  Second year All RET core didactic and clinic All RET core didactic and clinic

13 Application Process for the R.C. Programs Applicants must: 1. Be at least 18 years of age. 2. Complete all admission requirements to Edison, including EC application and testing. including EC application and testing. 3. High school graduate or GED. 4. Successfully complete placement test (unless exempted) given by the counseling center. Completion of all department of learning assistance (DLA) courses, if required.

(By June 30 th for Round 2 Admissions) 7. Possess at least grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or better on college course work taken for credit.

15 Records Check and Academic Selection  Attend a records check procedure where program admissions points are determined from previous academic work performed in high school or College as demonstrated on the applicant’s transcripts.  For any Health Professions Program ($15 One time Application Fee).  In the event that the number of applicants exceeds available space, individuals will be selected for admission based upon their point system ranking. Applicants with the highest Admission points will be ranked first.  Typically 30 Applicants are admitted each Summer, along with 8-10 alternates.
