3 What is an Athletic Therapist? The scope of practice of a Certified Athletic Therapist includes the assessment, prevention, immediate care, and reconditioning of musculoskeletal injuries.  Field assessment and care  Clinical assessment and rehabilitation

4 On Field Medical Care  Injury assessment  Basic emergency life support  Recognition and management of acute traumatic neurological dysfunction  Provision of first aid  Preparation for entrance into appropriate health care delivery systems  Utilization of techniques facilitating a safe return to participation (where appropriate)

5 Clinical Assessment & Rehabilitation  Assess injuries and conditions  Utilizes rehabilitative techniques  Therapeutic modality application such as Ultrasound, TENS, Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation & Interferential Current  Soft tissue mobilization  Physical reconditioning  Supportive strapping procedures  Promote an environment conducive to optimal healing  Prepare the individual for safe reintegration into an active lifestyle

8 Admission Requirements Ontario Secondary School Diploma plus:  English, Grade 12 (ENG4U)  Biology, Grade 12 (U)  Plus one of:  Physics, Grade 12 (U) or  Chemistry, Grade 12 (U) or  Math, Grade 12 (U)  Three additional Grade 12 credits at the U or M level.  Minimum 65% average in each course  OR  Two semesters of postsecondary education including required courses with a minimum 65% in each course.

9 Applicant Selection  Academic Performance  100 hours working with a Certified Athletic Therapist or Sports Physiotherapist (SPD)  Attendance at today’s Information Session

10 Direct Entry and Advanced Standing Do you have a University degree? (B Kin, BHK, BPE, BSc)  Consideration for advanced standing into 2 nd year is made with completion of the following:  Completion of the first year curriculum learning objectives via completed B Kin, BHK, BPE or BSc degree courses  Minimum grade of 65% in each course that covers the learning objectives of the Sheridan courses  Completion of supplementary package requirements

12 Extensive Field Placement Experience  Six consecutive semesters of field placement  Four semesters of Sports Injury Clinic placement  One summer internship  Over 1200 hours of placement in total Placement Examples Colleges, Universities, High Schools Private clinics OHL, AHL, Amateur hockey Toronto Blue Jays National Ballet of Canada Canada Basketball Hamilton Ti-Cats Toronto Argonauts
