All rights reserved. 2 of 10 Visual inspection Testing of support systems At this level the testing will be limited to a visual inspection. The senses used are SIGHT and TOUCH. Check that: 1.All lids and covers are in place 2.All fixings are secure 3.All joints are tight 4.All links are in place 5.Paint or other material is intact

All rights reserved. 3 of 10 Visual inspection Lids and covers To protect the cables and prevent the entry of rodents and insects: All conduit and trunking lids must be in place All screws must be fitted Any unused knockouts must be sealed with blind grommets or blank bushes There should be no more than 2mm gap between lid and fittings

All rights reserved. 4 of 10 Visual inspection Fixings Make sure all fixings are tightened, including fixings directly into the building fabric and fixtures into brackets. Ensure that conduit is fixed according to Appendix D of the IET onsite guide. Round-head screws should be used for fixing trunking to avoid damage to cables. Where 6mm gutter bolts are used the head should be on the inside of the trunking.

All rights reserved. 5 of 10 Visual inspection Joints It makes sense that, for the system to be as strong as possible, all joints should be as tight as possible. Where metallic conduit systems are used for the protective conductor, any loose joint will increase the resistance and cause major problems. Any exposed joints must be treated by the use of paint or galvanising treatments as appropriate.

All rights reserved. 6 of 10 Visual inspection Links Fly leads are required between the earth terminal of a metal box and the accessory it supplies. (A fly lead is a short length of protective conductor.) Links should be fitted across joints in metal trunking to ensure continuity.

All rights reserved. 7 of 10 Visual inspection Painting Bare metal left exposed to the air will rust Any dirt, swarfe or cutting paste should be totally removed from the conduit or trunking before the appropriate paint finish is applied Black paint for BE conduit Zinc-based paint for galvanised conduit PVC conduit does not need painting
