7 Here is a video of a man that is not good at dating. What are things he does that he shouldn’t do? Activity: Speech Acts

8 What he shouldn’t have done: After Watching What he should have done: Write a dialog with your partner… Give advice to this man.

9 Authentic Video Main Advantages: Real Motivating Easily Accessible Main Disadvantages: Length Complex Language/Speed of Speech Cultural Barriers Quality?

10 English Language Teaching Videos -Usually short -Slower speed of speech -Controlled language (grammar/vocabulary) -Often provide optional subtitles

11 Activity: Word Hunt Students watch the video once 2 nd Viewing give the students a ‘kind of word’ to look for Examples: -Verbs -All words with ‘ed’ endings -Proper names -Words with a certain sound (example, ‘t’ sound) -Conjunctions

12 Activity: Word Hunt What are some unusual sports? Why do people like to do dangerous sports? Warm up questions:

13 Activity: Word Hunt What do you see in the picture? What do you think is happening? Why might this be a ‘dangerous sport’?

14 Activity: Word Hunt Watch the video again, listen for: Adjectives Write all of the adjectives that you hear.

15 Activity: Eye on the Objects -Give students a list of a couple of objects -Students watch for the objects and later discuss what they mean in the story (why are they important?)

16 Activity: Eye on the Objects We’ll watch a story about “Farley” the red panda. Why are these objects important in the story? A Milk Bottle A Tube A Van Another Red Panda (“Banshee”)

17 Activity: Eye on the Objects We’ll watch a story about “Farley” the red panda. Why are these objects important in the story? A Milk Bottle A Tube A Van “Banshee” The zookeepers used a milk bottle to feed Farley by hand when he was young. Farley got sick, and he was given medicine and food in a tube. Farley was taken to his new home, the zoo, in a van. Farley needed to be around other red pandas. Banshee was his new playmate.
