MASTERPLAN 2016

Drivers for Masterplan: There are a number of drivers determining the need for – and direction of a Masterplan covering the entire St. Aloysius’ College Estate. These include: Ensuring decisions relating to the fabric of the estate are the right ones – and will not lead to future issues. To provide better Learning Resource and Study facilities for pupils within modern and well equipped buildings. To consolidate the disparate Pastoral Care provisions into one easily accessible location for both pupils and parents. To provide enhanced Drama and Music facilities with more accessible performance spaces. To provide dedicated Social Areas for Senior School pupils. To provide better Staff Room facilities in a central location, easily accessible from all buildings. To consider the best use of the Convent of Mercy Building and the Mount Building for the long term.

MASTERPLAN 2016 Existing Estate: All of the existing building floor plans have been collated – either from digital surveys completed in the past 5 years or scaled from historic PDF copies of plans The individual buildings have been provided with identifying codes allowing every individual room and space within the buildings to be allocated a unique reference code – independent of the ‘common’ name for space – which can be used in future documentation such as fire alarm detector head coding etc. The individual room uses have also been identified and colour coded on the drawings. From the drawings, the nett areas of all of the rooms has been determined and logged allowing for quick comparisons of equivalent spaces in differing buildings required to accommodate the inevitable churn of accommodation following implementation of the various masterplan projects. The total gross internal floor area of the main buildings is therefore 12,882m² - if you then add the Millerston Complex (1,615m²) and the new Sports Hall (2,499m²) this brings the overall gross internal floor area of the St. Aloysius College Estate to 16,996m²

MASTERPLAN 2016 Ongoing/Maintenance Projects: There are a number of ongoing projects being actioned during holiday periods which cover various aspects of Health and Safety and Maintenance issues. Such projects include: Senior School Fire Upgrading. A programme of fire upgrading works within the Senior School designed to improve the pre-existing fire detection and escape strategy, including provision of visual fire alarms, additional sounders and the identification and separation of fire escape routes. These works have been ongoing since 2009, with the most recent tranche of work carried out in the summer of 2015. External Fabric Repairs. In 2011 extensive surveys were carried out on external fabric of the Senior School and Mount Building and a scheme of fabric repairs was identified. The first section of these works, covering the single storey canteen block to the east of the main building and the front elevation and portico to first floor level as well as the Mount north gable and the northern section of the front elevation was carried out in 2012.

MASTERPLAN 2016 Short Term Projects: There are a number of low impact projects which can be carried out in the short term over the coming Easter Holidays. Such projects would include: Relocate Aftercare to the lower ground floor of the Mount Building. This will allow direct access to the external areas fronting on to Buccleuch Street, while retaining access to the ground floor toilets and Kitchen facilities. Access for parents would be via the lower entrance on Scott Street. Current S5 Common Room relocated to the ground floor, accessing directly through the rear entrance from Dalhousie Lane. Upgrade Senior School Reception. These projects are entirely self-contained and will involve no building work or disruption out with the immediate work areas.

MASTERPLAN 2016 Medium Term Projects: There are a number of smaller projects which can be carried out in the medium term over the coming Summer and Christmas Holidays. Such projects would include: Relocate Upper School Office to the Clavius Building and provide a dedicated Pastoral/Interview Room Existing Upper School office converted into Magis Classroom Replacement of existing pull out seating in Assembly Hall Games Office converted into S5 Study Room These projects will generally be minor projects with minimal building work and disruption to existing functions of the Estate.

MASTERPLAN 2016 Long Term Projects: There are a number of larger projects which can be considered for implementation over the longer term Such projects would include: Library Relocation Assembly Hall Upgrade Senior School Lift Pastoral Care Consolidation Mount Building New Entrance and Lift Transitus Centre in Mount Building Performing Arts Centre These projects will generally be involve significant alterations/building work and will possibly require to be carried out (partially) during term time due to the extensive nature of the works.

MASTERPLAN 2016 Long Term Projects – Library Relocation Two schemes have been prepared showing the Library accommodation located solely on ground floor of Senior School creating a form of ‘Learning Zone’ which could be utilised in part by the Additional Support team. Control of book stock when Library accommodation split between two rooms off the main circulation zone will need to be addressed – however the resultant spaces provide a significant increase in the Library Area as noted below: Existing Library Area - 92m² Ground Floor Schemes - 236m²

MASTERPLAN 2016 Long Term Projects – Assembly Hall Upgrade This project will include a permanent stage built at the end of the existing hall accessed directly from the corridor spaces outside the assembly hall. Existing pull out seating replaced with new would achieve approx. 126 seats over approx. half of the floor space remaining following construction of the stage. Space will be allocated in existing shower areas for large scale furniture storage – seats and tables etc. A new Control room would be located in previous Reprographics room with clear view out across stage. New vestibule and entrance will be formed on Hill street elevation providing a more visible direct access from the street for visiting patrons. This external construction could be extended to form a visual barrier between the bins and the street if they are to stay in this location. Possibility of forming a couple of small ‘Boxes’ accessed from the English corridor. These could be isolated when not in use by shutters or moveable partition doors. Removal of lockers from English corridor and part of the Blue Corridor can be offset by forming new locker areas accessed off the Red corridor in the existing changing areas.

MASTERPLAN 2016 Long Term Projects – Senior School Lift This project provides for the formation of a new internal/external lift shaft accessed from the main corridor of the Scott Street Building. The new lift will provide full wheelchair access to the ground, first and second floors of the Scott Street and Link Buildings, as well as the English corridor on the mezzanine level. This therefore covers the majority of teaching spaces in the senior School. Other elements of the works include new external and internal ramps to facilitate access within the individual floors, as well as fire stair improvements to create wheelchair refuges. Some elements of these works (fire doors/wheelchair refuges) have been completed as part of the general fire upgrading project - however this is a small portion of the overall project.

MASTERPLAN 2016 Long Term Projects – Pastoral Care Consolidation A proposal has been prepared to utilise the garden area to the south of the building. Combined with alterations to existing ground floor accommodation the Pastoral Care Centre will incorporate the following: 2No. 7 person offices 2No. Individual meeting rooms A group meeting rooms, Depute’s office and PA. There is a possibility of a direct link through the existing Janitor’s room from the entrance area. The proposal also includes the provision of an improved Kitchen area for daily service and for event catering. The Career’s Office would be relocated to the front of the building and provided with open access PCs and displays for information leaflets and prospectus’.

MASTERPLAN 2016 Long Term Projects – Mount Building New Entrance and Lift This project involves the relocation of the Mount Building main entrance, combined with the installation of a new internal lift which brings the building more into the campus and provides a much more accessible facility. Alterations to internal cross corridor doors and the provision of a platform lift within the upper floor provides disabled access to the majority of the main areas of the building.

MASTERPLAN 2016 Long Term Projects – Transitus Centre in Mount Building With the Mount Building being retained for the long term, opportunity arises to rationalise the use of the building. The current option provides dedicated spaces for the Transitus (P7) classes with associated activity spaces and cloakrooms. As part of these works provisions for Art within the Mount Building can be rationalised, providing larger studio spaces at the North side of the building. These works can be associated with the entrance/lift proposals noted earlier.

MASTERPLAN 2016 Long Term Projects – Performing Arts Centre This project has the Convent of Mercy building converted into a dedicated performing arts facility removing the Music department from the Mount Building – with the Assembly Hall being used to stage large productions in the Senior School. The accommodation provided would be as follows: 4No. Music Classrooms - 36-40m² approx. Schola Room- 102m² Drama Studio- 90m² Rehearsal Room- 23m² 10No. Practice Rooms- 11-12m² approx Admin Office- 12m² DoM Office- 12m² HoC Office- 12m² Recording Studio- 23m² (including separate control room)
