3 KTP Mission Knowledge Transfer Partnerships is Europe’s leading programme helping businesses to improve their competitiveness, productivity and performance through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills that are available within the UK knowledge base. 4 Partnership Structure Associate :– Works in the company but is a university employee (enables access to university facilities) Business :– Located in UK SME or Large Strategically important; Led by CEO and Company Supervisor University/KB :– Lead Academic plus Academic Supervisor (half day per week) and Admin support

8 The Features of KTP Project length of between 6 months and 3 years Associates recruited jointly by KB and Business partner but employed by KB Associate located mainly at business premises with Business Supervisor KB Supervisor spends approx. half a day per week at the business.

9 Strategic relevance to the business and INNOVATIVE Stimulating and challenging for the academic team Intellectually challenging for the Associate Sound and significant business case delivering growth capability. Clear knowledge transfer Project Criteria

10 KTP – Budget & main points Partnership between business and academia - must be driven by business need Annual project budget of ~ £60 - £65k Typically 67% grant funding for SME and 50% for large company Project length typically 2 years but can be 6m to 3 years >80% success rate for proposals

11 The group of KTPs will run together as a cohort The cohort will be joined by the Partnerships undertaking collaborative R&D or a feasibility study – the other strands of this Competition. Knowledge sharing approach Projects will be supported with a programme of networking between partners Dedicated group on the _connect website Targeted Call Cohort – Knowledge-Sharing

12 The Application Process – Targeted Call for KTP Prepare EOI* for submission to KTP Adviser Prepare application with guidance from KTP Adviser Application assessed by KTP Partnership Approval Group (PAG) Acceptance into PE cohort by Funder panel * EOI – Expression of Interest Proposal funded – continued input from KTP Adviser

14 Case study KTP8917 : University of Southampton and : TSL Technology Limited, a small company providing electromechanical, instrumentation and micro-hydraulics equipment, power electronics and motors for the energy and marine industries. Aim: To design and develop power electronic converters to enable grid connectivity for small off shore renewable and other renewable energy sources.

15 Case study KTP9029 : University of Warwick and : Narec Development Services Limited, NDSL provides commercial services to the renewables sector which utilise the asset and intellectual knowledge held by Narec Aim: To develop condition monitoring techniques for power electronic offshore renewable applications that can be used in operations and maintenance processes to improve operational reliability.

16 Case study KTP8824 : University of Strathclyde and : Smarter Grid Solutions Limited, who provide “smart grid” technology/software offering affordable ways to manage electricity network congestion issues at a local, regional or national level and cope with increasing volumes of low carbon generation and demand. Aim: To embed new testing techniques in support of on-going product development and sales into the rapidly expanding Smart Grid marketplace.
