How to Ride a Bike with no Training Wheels

Description of Learners Kids who are learning how to transition from a bike with no training wheels *Can also apply to those who are just learning how to ride a bike with only two wheels

Objectives Learners should be able to demonstrate their ability to ride a bike with no training wheels when faced with such a situation.

Description of Environment Outdoors, preferably in nice weather Smooth side walk/asphalt with no curbs

Orientation and Information Activity Last time we met, we learned what the appropriate safety gear for riding a bike is. To jog your memory here are some of the most important and most commonly used safety gear used: Helmet Picture of helmet Knee Pads Picture of knee pads Elbow Pads Picture of elbow pads

Motivation Activity You could motivate your rider by giving them a reward if they make it so far on the bike with no help or training wheels. You could also motivate your rider by making their destination somewhere exciting or a surprise.

Step 1 Before getting on the bike, the rider must put on the appropriate safety gear which includes helmet and elbow and knee pads. The rider should also be wearing appropriate clothing and shoes. No sandals or baggy clothing that could catch on something Picture of child wearing helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads

Step 2 After making sure the gear is securely on, the rider should step one leg over the middle bar of the bike and place their foot on the ground, straddling the bike. Picture of child straddling a bike

Step 3 Next, the rider should put one foot on the peddle and push off the ground with their other foot, making them stand up on the peddle and rising so they can are high enough to take a seat on the bike seat. They should put the foot they pushed off the ground with on the other peddle and begin pushing the peddles with their feet. *If the rider is a young child or has trouble with this step, their parent or instructor can hold onto the bike to keep it steady until they can maintain balance on their own. 10 How to Brake Inform the rider that slamming on the brakes hard and fast will make stopping difficult. If the bike the rider is using has peddle brakes, they should start peddling backwards slowly in order to come to a stop. If the bike the rider is using has the brakes on their handle bars, they should slowly use their hands to press on the brakes in order to come to a stop. 11 Application and Evaluation Activity To apply and evaluate what the rider has learned, set a goal and have the rider ride their bike to the set goal.
