© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 What Training Is Needed Well it’s not only inspector and equipment training that some jurisdictions think that is needed - After all OBD II has been around for over 17 years – ASSUMING that all repair technicians know how to diagnosis and repair OBD II systems is WRONG Many repair technicians THINK they know OBD II Systems = No training The reality is that many technicians Guess and NOT Test for problems

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 What Training Is Needed Since there is no standard in the industry - we have many technicians that cannot diagnosis and repair OBD II failures proficiently This issue causes repair technicians to throw parts at vehicles hoping its fixed – Example below

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Example 1 2007 Ford F150 5.4L with 3 DTCs P0300, P0301 and P0306

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Ford F150 5.4L with 3 DTCs P0300, P0301 and P0306 The cause of the misfires on this and many other engines was caused by the WRONG oil being used in the engine The owner had the vehicle serviced at a local tire shop that offered a $19.95 oil and filter change. The oil that the tire shop used was 10W30 along with a cheap oil filter. Since the proper oil and filter are critical to proper operation of the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) system, engine damaged was a result. Ford requires 5W20 synthetic blend oil along with a Motorcraft oil filter every 3000 to 5000 miles. Damaged Cam Phaser

A proper diagnostic procedure that starts with the basics - battery and engine test led us to a mechanical problem. A Relative Compression test was performed using the OTC EVO scan tool. The results of the test confirmed the misfire was a mechanical problem.

The fix for this vehicle was, new cam phasers, timing chains, VCT solenoids, oil sump cleaned and correct oil and filter installed.

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Stop Cutting Training Programs Down To The Lowest Common Denominator Isn't it about cleaning the air? So why are training programs always cut or downsized? Remember I & M Good training programs for today's repair technicians are web based, live seminars, webcast and most important live hands on training – there is NOTHING like doing it

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Stop Cutting Training Programs Down To The Lowest Common Denominator Jurisdictions need to provide ongoing training – Paul Davis from MA got it - ongoing training is provided Providing training on the Top DTC P0420 - P0171 - P0300-etc – Monitors – EVAP Systems – Oxygen Sensors to name a few – If the repair technicians don’t update they will evaporate

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Testing – What To & Use Or Not To Use Repair technicians don’t always know where to start their diagnostic procedure. Starting with basic test just like the big box diagnostic machines of the old days Many don’t have the proper training – or skills to use the equipment they purchased. They should have an updated information system – AllData – MotoLogic – Identifix – Mitchell

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Testing – What To Use Or Not To Use Repair shops should not be working on inspection failures if they don’t own - proper information systems – tools – equipment. All that is a waste if they are not properly trained Is it time to require an equipment list? Training requirement?

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Testing – What To Use Or Not To Use Example of when a shop and their technicians don’t have the proper training and equipment 2003 Jeep Liberty Misfire Problem Sometimes vehicles are diagnosed wrong - costing the owner extra money – without repairing the vehicle

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Testing – What To Use Or Not To Use The shop replaced injectors, plugs, O2 sensor, crankshaft sensor, cam sensor, throttle body and the PCM all without repairing the vehicle Some shops buy tools and equipment but don’t take the time to learn how to use them properly

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Testing – What To Use Or Not To Use The fix was not that hard – misfire = a defective fuel pump They looked at Fuel Trim by not hard enough – Escan displays a visual of Fuel Trim

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Pre Checking Fuel Pressure and Volume Fuel Pressure 48 Lbs. Volume 1.8 GPM

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Post Checking Fuel Pressure and Volume Fuel Pressure 48 Lbs. Volume 6.3 GPM

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Different Delivery Systems Training - self study books - live seminars - web based training or the real thing - live hands on classes – this is where the repair technician can learn the best – doing it makes them better techs Alaska North Star Borough used a training program that I had designed – written test – pre –post – hands on test of 20 tasks – pre – post – repair technicians needed to pass both A good way to have technicians stay up to date before attending a live seminar or class is by attending a Webcast - live and recorded for review

© A.T.T.S. Inc. 2013 Ongoing Training Since Technology Is Not Standing Still Training has never been as important as it is today - vehicles are becoming more complex USA Today reported - New cars are growing so complex — and owners manuals so voluminous — that automakers are encouraging dealers to add staff geeks or go high-tech to explain features All IM programs should have or implement on going training if they want a successful program
