3 THE VERB “BE”  PRESENT SIMPLE: AM/IS/ARE  PAST SIMPLE: WAS/ WERE

8 REMEMBER!!!  “ BE” is a STATE verb.  We use it to describe states.  There is no action!

NEGATIVE (DON’T + V1) I don’t live in Mersin. (DOESN’T + V1) She doesn’t live in Mersin. QUESTIONS (DO YOU+ V1?) Do you live in Adana? (Yes, I do/No, I don’t) (DOES SHE + V1?) Does she live in Adana? (Yes, she does/No, she doesn’t)

19 REMEMBER  I HAVE a car………… She HAS a car.

20 We use the present simple to talk about: 1)routines and habits: I wake up at 6.30 am every day. I smoke a lot. I drink my coffee with no sugar. She goes to Alaçatı every summer.

21 2) things which are generally true or stay the same for a long time( facts & permanent situations) She is a nice person. She treats people nicely. She doesn’t get angry easily.

22 More examples: Water boils at 100°C and it freezes at 0°C. Dogs eat meat. I live in Adana. I work at Çağ University.

23 Adverbs of Frequency We use the simple present with adverbs of frequency  ALWAYS/SOMETIMES/NEVER etc  Once a day/ a week/a month etc Twice a day/a week /a month etc three times a day/a week/ a month etc. e.g. She is always late for work. She always arrives at work late. I see my parents once a year.

24 THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS Am/Is/Are + V-ing  SUBJECT + AM/IS/ARE + V-ing (I am going)  SUBJECT + AM/IS/ARE NOT + V-ing (I’m not going)  AM/IS/ARE + SUBJECT + V-ing? (Are you going?)

25 We use the present continuous to talk about: 1)actions happening at the time of speaking: Be quiet please. The baby is sleeping. Look! It’s snowing! 2) Actions happening around now: He doesn’t like his job, so he’s looking for a new job these days. Joe wants to move to Spain, so he’s learning Spanish.

26 3) temporary actions/break in routine: -She’s normally an English teacher, but she’s working as a tourist guide for the summer. -She usually wears black, but today she’s wearing a blue dress. Time Expressions: now, at the moment, at present, right now, today, these days, this week etc

27 REMEMBER! We do NOT use the present continuous with verbs of the senses, emotions, mental states and possession such as see, hear, smell, be, like, love, hate, want, need, prefer, understand, remember, forget, know, have (possess), belong, own etc. e.g.- A: Who’s that girl? B: Well… I know her, but I don’t remember her name. -Awww! This room smells horrible! -I’m very tired. I want to sleep. -You’re acting very strangely these days. I really don’t understand you.

28 PRESENT SIMPLE VS PRESENT CONTINUOUS PRESENT SIMPLE -Joe takes a shower every evening. -She usually wears black. to talk about things that are generally true. Time expressions: always, sometimes, once a week, every day, normally etc PRESENT CONTINUOUS -A: Where’s Joe? B: He’s in the bathroom. He’s taking a shower. -She’s wearing a blue dress today. To talk about things that are happening now/around now. Time expressions: now, at the moment, today, this week etc.
