Matter ELEMENTS, COMPOUNDS, AND MIXTURES

Matter – A Review  Matter is anything that has mass (can be weighed) and volume (takes up space).  Matter is made up of atoms  atoms are the building blocks for all matter  atoms form different elements  elements form molecules  Matter can be classified as either a pure substance or a mixture

Matter – Pure Substances A pure substance:  is made up of one type of particle  has its own unique physical and chemical properties  composition never varies  examples: oxygen (O 2 ), water (H 2 O), carbon dioxide (CO 2 )

Matter – Pure Substances: Elements An element:  consists of only one kind of atom  can exist as either atoms or molecules  cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical or physical means  examples: oxygen (O 2 ), helium (He), gold (Au)

Matter – Pure Substances: Compounds A compound:  is made of different elements held by chemical bonds  has elements in a specific ratio that is always the same  has its own unique physical and chemical properties  can only be separated by chemical means, not physically  examples: salt (NaCl), water (H 2 O), carbon dioxide (CO 2 )

Matter – Mixtures A mixture:  is made from different pure substances (elements, compounds, or both) that are not chemically joined  is held together by physical forces, not chemical  can be separated physically (filtration, evaporation, distillation)  examples: ocean water, air, soil, vegetable soup
