CHEMISTRY BHS 2013-2013 MS. JENSEN UNIT 1: MATTER AND CHANGE

MATTER Notes Pages 1-2

BUILDING BLOCKS OF MATTER Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass

BUILDING BLOCKS OF MATTER Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass Mass – Measure of amount of matter Measured in grams, g

WEIGHT V. MASS

BUILDING BLOCKS OF MATTER Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass Mass – Measure of amount of matter (grams) Atom – Smallest part of an element that maintains the properties of that element Comes from Greek “átomos”, which means “uncuttable” or “the smallest indivisible particle of matter” Was coined in 450 BCE by Democritus

ATOMS

BUILDING BLOCKS OF MATTER Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass Mass – Measure of amount of matter (grams) Atom – Smallest part of an element that maintains the properties of that element Element – Pure substance with only one type of atom Cannot be separated into a simpler substance

ATOMS OF GOLD (AU)

ELEMENTAL GOLD

BULLION: PURE SUBSTANCE (GOLD) WITH ONLY ONE TYPE OF ATOM

BUILDING BLOCKS OF MATTER Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass Mass – Measure of amount of matter (grams) Atom – Smallest part of an element that maintains the properties of that element Element – Pure substance with only one type of atom Compound – Pure substance, atoms of two or more elements are chemically bonded

COMPOUNDS Water, H 2 O, contains two elements: Oxygen and Hydrogen Caffeine, C 8 H 10 N 4 O 2, contains four elements: Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Nitrogen

BUILDING BLOCKS OF MATTER Matter – Anything that takes up space and has mass Mass – Measure of amount of matter (grams) Atom – Smallest part of an element that maintains the properties of that element Element – Pure substance with only one type of atom Compound – Pure substance, atoms of two or more elements are chemically bonded Mixture – A combination of two or more pure substances that are not chemically bonded

MIXTURES Heterogeneous Mixture: Components that make up the mixture are not uniform Rocks, oil and water, soup, pizza Homogenous Mixture: Components that make up the mixture are uniformly distributed throughout Air, sugar water

CAN YOU IDENTIFY THE FOLLOWING? You will be shown a series of photos. Tell if each photo represents an item composed of an element, compound, or mixture. Review: An element contains just one type of atom. A compound contains two or more different atoms joined together. A mixture contains two or more different substances that are only physically joined together, not chemically. A mixture can contain both elements and compounds.
