2 A Centre of all round Educational Excellence for the Community The Nower Hill Curriculum KEY STAGE 3 This stage refers to years 7 and 8. In many schools, Key stage 3 also includes year 9. At Nower Hill, students move towards their GCSEs in year 9 to allow them more time to master the subject content and to be able to perform to the highest standard they are capable of achieving.

3 A Centre of all round Educational Excellence for the Community Key Stage 3: Year 7 4 periods a week of: Maths English 3 periods a week of: Science 2 periods a week of: Physical Education History Geography French DT (This will rotate between Food technology, Resistant Materials and Textiles) ICT/Computing 1 period a week of: Oracy Classics Music Art Drama Citizenship Philosophy, Religion and Ethics Students will study the following subjects in Year 7:

4 A Centre of all round Educational Excellence for the Community Key Stage 3: Year 8 4 periods a week of: Maths English 3 periods a week of: Science 1 period a week of: Music Art Drama Citizenship Philosophy, Religion and Ethics 2 periods a week of: Physical Education History Geography DT (This will rotate between Food technology, Resistant Materials and Textiles) ICT/Computing Language 1 Language 2 (Towards the end of year 7 students can choose 2 languages to study from a choice of French, Spanish, German or Latin) Students will study the following subjects in Year 8:

5 A Centre of all round Educational Excellence for the Community Additional Support in Key Stage 3 Students who find the full year 7 and 8 curriculum too challenging due to language barriers or specific learning needs are well accommodated by our very comprehensive inclusion programme. The support offered includes: Withdrawal from Classics lessons in year 7 for additional English support. 1-1 maths and/or English support as deemed necessary. Dropping one or both language options in year 8 (dependent upon need) to receive additional English/literacy support. Support with reading via a range of accelerated reading programmes. Full or partial withdrawal from the curriculum to pursue an alternative highly personalised curriculum (referred to a ‘Stretch’).

6 A Centre of all round Educational Excellence for the Community KEY STAGE 4 refers to years 9, 10 and 11. This is when students start to prepare for GCSE and so they reduce the number of subjects studied. Students focus on 9 subjects (plus Physical Education) which could lead to up to 12 GCSEs. The Nower Hill Curriculum

7 A Centre of all round Educational Excellence for the Community The Nower Hill Curriculum Students must study all of their ‘CORE’ subjects in Key stage 4 and then are able to choose an additional 4 subjects CORE SUBJECTS ARE…… Maths English (usually 2 GCSEs – language and literature) Science (usually 2 or 3 GCSEs) Physical Education (no GCSE exam) Philosophy, Religion and Ethics (half GCSE) Citizenship (half GCSE)

11 A Centre of all round Educational Excellence for the Community Additional Support in Key Stage 4 Students who find the full year 9, 10 and 11 curriculum too challenging due to language barriers or specific learning needs are well accommodated by our very comprehensive inclusion programme. The support offered includes: Withdrawal from one or more options to attend study plus (extra maths, English and homework support) Withdrawal from one or more options to attend Curriculum Enrichment (extra English and homework support for students who have English as an additional language) 1-1 maths and/or English support as deemed necessary. Full or partial withdrawal from the curriculum to pursue an alternative highly personalised curriculum (referred to a ‘Stretch’).

12 A Centre of all round Educational Excellence for the Community A level provision Students normally study 4 subjects in year 12 and 3 in year 13. This is flexible in order to meet the needs of students. Sometimes students will study 5 subjects in year 12 and 4 in year 13. Sometimes a more personalised combination is needed where fewer year 13 subjects can be managed. Students also receive a programme of personal, social and health education as well as supervised study to support good working habits at home.

14 A Centre of all round Educational Excellence for the Community A level provision Other subjects offered across the borough (which students can take whilst spending most of the week with us) include: Law Dance Accounting Product design German

15 A Centre of all round Educational Excellence for the Community Supporting students We continually provide support to students and guidance to both students and parents to ensure the curriculum meets each individual child’s needs and that the highest levels of progress are made. Targets are set in each subject for year 7, 8, GCSE and A level. These are aspirational targets. We aim to ensure our students always strive to be the very best they can be. Progress towards targets is reviewed continually and reported to parents at least once a term.
