2  Poverty is the lack of basic human needs, such as clean water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter, because of the inability to afford them. This is also referred to as absolute poverty or destitution.  Poverty affects people in our community– not just those who live in third world countries.  There is so much you can do to help by just working in the local community first. Global Poverty

3  8 million people die every year because they are too poor to stay alive  1 in 6 people live in extreme poverty (less than 1 dollar a day)  3. More than 1 billion people don’t have access to clean drinking water and an estimated 400 million of these are children.  The world produces more than enough food that could feed everyone, but not many people are fortunate enough to have it.  The wealthy class consumes the majority of the world’s food when the poorer classes get around 1.5% including the third world countries

4  The World Food Program says, “The poor are hungry and their hunger traps them in poverty. Hunger is the number one cause of death in the world, killing more than HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.”  Almost half the world lives off of $2.50 a day and is mostly responsible for third world deaths.

5  Poverty line : the designated income below which households are considered in poverty.  Economic, social and cultural rights: things to which people are entitled to live a fully human life which meets their physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs.  Poverty proofing :The process by which government departments, local authorities and state agencies assess policies and programs at design and review stages in relation to the likely impact that they will have, or have had, on poverty and on inequalities that are likely to lead to poverty.  Poverty risk: the proportion of people living in households where their disposable income is below the threshold of %60. Poverty Terms
