2 The Counterculture “Hippies” –White, middle-class college youths who had grown disillusioned with the war in Vietnam and injustices in America during the 1960s –Instead of challenging the system, they turned their backs on traditional America and tried to establish a whole new society based on peace and love

3 “Tune In, Turn On, Drop Out” Hippies shared some beliefs with the New Left –Materialism, technology and war had grown hollow Timothy Leary –Harvard psychology professor –Credo; tens of thousands left college, work, home to create this idyllic community

9 Decline of the Movement Peace and love gave way to violence and disillusionment Communes turned seedy and dangerous –Do your own thing did not provide enough guidance –Drugs gave way to violence and breakdowns –Hippies turned to welfare and food stamps provided by the government they had rejected

10 A New Culture Although the hippie movement was short-lived, its arts and social attitudes had a lasting effect on American society Pop Art (Andy Warhol) Rock Music –The Beatles –Woodstock 1969 400,000 Upstate New York Three days Popular bands

11 Changing Attitudes Attitudes toward sexual behavior more casual and permissive –The Sexual Revolution Mass culture; books, movies and magazines, began to address sexual behavior and violence Liberal attitudes about dress, appearance, lifestyle and social behavior

12 The Conservative Response The New Right believed these changing attitudes contributed to the moral decay of our society Conservatives attacked the counterculture and warned of threats on college campuses Caused a profound change in the political landscape of the United States –Set the nation on a more conservative course
