1 MOTIVATION UNIT 9 TKT COURSE MOTIVATION INFLUENCES: WHY PEOPLE DECIDE TO DO SOMETHING HOW LONG THEY KEEP WANTING TO DO IT. HOW THEY WORK TO ACHIEVE IT. THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS WHICH MAKE US WANT TO AND CONTINUE TO WANT TO DO SOMETHING AND TURN OUR WISHES IN ACTIONS DIANA OLIVA VALDES RAMIREZ

2 KEY CONCEPTS  THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT FACTORS (THINGS THAT INFLUENCE) WHICH CAN INFLUENCE MOTIVATION. THEY INCLUDE:  The usefulness to us of knowing the language. It can help us achieve practical things.  Our interest in the target language culture (culture of the language we are learning). Interest in culture with a capital C, High culture. Or with a small c.culture  Managing to communicate in a foreign language can make us want to communicate more and better.

3 FACTORS  Confidence : Feeling that we can do this succesfully  Learner autonomy/Independence : Feelling responsible for and in control of our own learning.  Achievement : Being successful at something we have worked at.  Encouragement and support from others  Wishing to communicate fully with people who matter to you.  Our interest in the learning process.

4 KINDS OF MOTIVATION LANGUAGE TEACHING CLASSROOM  Some motivation come from inside the learner and some come from the learner´s environment.  Motivation can change with age.

6 LANGUAGE TEACHING CLASSROOM  THE TEACHER 1. Show a good example by being committed and motivated 2. Try to behave naturally 3. Be as sensitive and accepting as you can  THE CLASSROOM ATMOSPHERE 1. Create a pleasant, calm, secure and ordered atmosphere in the classroom 2. Bring in humour and laughter, and smile.

7 LANGUAGE TEACHING CLASSROOM  THE TASK 1. Give clear instructions 2. Point out the purpose and usefulness of every task  RAPPORT 1. Treat each learner as an individual  SELF CONFIDENCE 1. Give positive feedback and praise 2. Make sure your students experience succes 3. Accept mistakes –they are natural part of learning

8 LANGUAGE TEACHING CLASSROOM  INTEREST 1. Select interesting tasks and topics 2. Offer a variety of materials and activities 3. Make tasks challenging to involve your students 4. Use learners´ interests rather tan tests or grades, to encourage learning  AUTONOMY 1. Encourage creative and imaginative ideas 2. Encourage questions and other contributions from students 3. 9 LANGUAGE TEACHING CLASSROOM  PERSONAL RELEVANCE 1. Try and personalise tasks to make them relevant  GOAL/TARGET (aim for learners and teachers) 1. Set up several specific learning goals for the learners 2. Encourage the learners to set goals and work towards them 3. Do a needs analysis of the learners´ goals and needs  CULTURE 1. Make learners familiar with the cultural background of the language they are learning 2. Invite native speakers to some classes 3. Find penfriends for your learners.
