1 THE PROCESS OF LEARNING I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught. Winston Churchill

2 VISUAL – I SEE This student – Absorbs information by seeing it in front of them and stores these images in their brain Enjoy reading, have good handwriting, are very detail oriented, are organized and res very aware of colors and shapes

3 VISUAL – I SEE This student – Tends to struggle with verbal directions Are easily distracted by noise Remember people’s faces better than their names Often need to maintain contact with a person to concentrate on a conversation

4 VISUAL – I SEE This student needs you to – Write out directions or Encourage them to ask for help with verbal directions Teach them using visuals – charts, pictures, maps Physically demonstrate tasks Use flashcards and blocks Organize information using colors Encourage them to take notes and organize info on paper and with details Give them a quiet, neat place to work Keep distractions away from them, if possible

5 AUDITORY – I TALK This student – Learns best by hearing and speaking Often talks more than the average person Is very social Enjoys hearing stories and jokes Understands concepts by talking about them May excel is music or performing arts

6 AUDITORY – I TALK This student – May read slowly and have trouble writing May struggle to follow written directions Have a tough time staying quiet for long periods of time Remember names and recognize tone of voice well, but may not always remember names Often hum or sing, and they may whisper to themselves while reading

7 AUDITORY – I TALK This student needs you to – Play word games and use rhymes to practice language Let them read aloud, even when alone, and follow text with her finger Have them repeat information aloud to memorize it Let them work on assignments and projects in small groups Have them read aloud to younger children Use beats, rhythms and songs to reinforce educational information

8 KINESTHETIC – I DO This student – Learns best by doing – moving around and handling physical objects Likes to explore the outdoors Are often very coordinated, excel in athletics and performing arts Usually express feelings physically – hugging or hitting Prefer to try new skills for themselves rather than being given instructions or shown a demonstration

9 KINESTHETIC – I DO This student – May find it hard to sit for long periods of time Struggle with reading and spelling Often considered “difficult” and misdiagnosed with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) *In more recent years, more educators have accepted that they simply have different learning needs and are urged to consider more kinesthetic learning activities

10 KINESTHETIC – I DO This student needs you to – Give them frequents breaks Let them try something first before you give detailed instructions Provide plenty of hands – on learning tools such as crayons, blocks, puzzles, science experiments, modeling clay Not limit their study space Allow them to study while moving around, lying on the floor, in a “comfy corner” Use the outdoors for learning opportunities

11 KINESTHETIC – I DO This student needs you to – Teach them through games and projects Let them make presentations to show what they know Incorporate movement into study. Ex. Practice spelling words during a nature walk Have a physical component to your afterschool program

12 READ/WRITE – I READ This student – Learns best through the written word Absorbs information by reading books and handouts, taking lots of notes and making lists Prefers lectures, diagrams, pictures, and scientific concepts be explained in writing Is often a fast reader and skillful writer

13 READ/WRITE – I READ This student – May struggle with verbal directions Are easily distracted by noise Some are quiet May not pick up on body language or other social cues

14 READ/WRITE – I READ This student needs you to- Encourage them to take plenty notes, rewrite them in their own words and study from them Give them well-organized written material Write key points in full sentences Give them plenty writing exercises Explain diagrams, graphs or mathematical data using language Provide quiet work area, if possible Have dictionary, thesaurus and other resource material Give them multiple choice problems

15 Many models of learning styles exist. Most notable is David Kolb’s Experiential Model and Learning Style inventory. No one falls into only one category. They may be categorized into one, but their various traits
