Identifying your Preferred Learning Style Why is it important for learners to know their preferred leaning style? How would one benefit from knowing their preferred learning style? Each individual has their own preferred learning style. The three primary leaning styles are Auditory, Visual and Kinesthetic. Throughout the lesson you will be presented with definitions, examples and indicators of the primary styles of learning. Links are provided to allow you to explore each of the styles of learning, to review the information or to participate in a learning style assessment that will solidify your knowledge of which learning style best benefits YOU! Click one of the links below to begin exploring the three learning styles or click on the video below to see examples of the learning styles. At any point you can utilize the tabs at the bottom of each screen to navigate freely. Auditory Learning Visual Learning Kinesthetic Learning Auditory LearningVisual LearningKinesthetic Learning Knowing your preferred learning style will assist you academically, personally and professionally! You are an individual! No one learns exactly the same as you! Data suggests that 50% of learners prefer Visual, 30% prefer kinesthetic and 20% prefer auditory learning. Determine which style you prefer! Expected outcome: Adult learners will be able to identify, describe and list five unique characteristics or examples for each of the three main styles of learning.

Auditory Learning Style Individuals with this preferred style of learning learn best from the spoken word. These learners love the lectures. They gain and retain from words. They prefer to have verbal explanations rather than the written word. Methods to assist with teaching to Auditory Learners Utilize: Video tapes Audio tapes Books on tape Melodies, rhythms and beats to reinforce information Children practicing active listening HomeVisual LearningKinesthetic Learning Auditory Learning Review Characteristics of Auditory Learners acquire knowledge by reading aloud remember by verbalizing lessons to themselves sit where they can hear but needn't pay attention to what is happening in front may not coordinate colors or clothes, but can explain why they are wearing what they are wearing and why hum or talk to themselves or others when bored Quick Tips for Auditory Learners Record lectures and then listen to them Repeat material out loud and in your own words Discuss materials in your study groups Read textbooks aloud Listen to wordless background music while studying

Visual Learning Style Individuals with this preferred style of learning learn best from material or information that is presented in a diagram or in pictures. Instructors that utilize visual aids, videos, and maps capture easily the attention of these learners. Methods to assist with teaching to Visual Learners Utilize: Technology Videos Overheads PowerPoint Illustrate notes Handouts HomeAuditory LearningKinesthetic Learning Visual Learning Review An example of Visual Learning CHARACTERISTICS of VISUAL LEARNERS take numerous detailed notes tend to sit in the front are usually neat and clean often close their eyes to visualize or remember something find something to watch if they are bored like to see what they are learning benefit from illustrations and presentations that use color are attracted to written or spoken language rich in imagery prefer stimuli to be isolated from auditory and kinesthetic distraction find passive surroundings ideal Quick Facts about Visual Learning The occipital lobes at the back of the brain manage the visual sense. Both the occipital and parietal lobes manage spatial orientation.

Kinesthetic Learning Style Individuals with this preferred learning style of learning enjoy doing. They gain so much from touching, feeling and actually doing something. These students enjoy lab opportunities. Often, they leave a lecture to go out and build, create or experience the topic or subject discussed. Methods to assist with teaching to Kinesthetic Learners Utilize: Models Puzzles Blocks Computers Projects The image shows an example of Kinesthetic or hands on learning HomeAuditory LearningVisual Learning Kinesthetic Learning Review Characteristics of Kinesthetic Learners need to be active and take frequent breaks speak with their hands and with gestures remember what was done, but have difficulty recalling what was said or seen find reasons to tinker or move when bored rely on what they can directly experience or perform activities such as cooking, construction, engineering and art help them perceive and learn enjoy field trips and tasks that involve manipulating materials sit near the door or someplace else where they can easily get up and move around are uncomfortable in classrooms where they lack opportunities for hands-on experience communicate by touching and appreciate physically expressed encouragement, such as a pat on the back Quick Tips for Kinesthetic Learners Take study breaks often Learn new material while doing something active (e.g., read a textbook while on a treadmill) Chew gum while studying Work while standing Try to take classes with instructors who encourage demonstrations and fieldwork

Auditory Learning Style Review Home Auditory LearningVisual LearningKinesthetic LearningAssessment link Would you like to test your knowledge of the Auditory Learning style? Simply click here. Are you an Auditory Learner? How many of the characteristics of Auditory Learning do you have? Do you: Enjoy talking. Talk aloud to themselves. Like explaining things to others. Remember names. Recognize variations in a person’s tone of voice. Understand concepts better by talking about them. Are distracted by background noise. Have difficulty following written directions. Read slowly. Have difficulty being quiet for extended periods of time. Like being read to. Memorize things by repeating them aloud. Enjoy music. Whisper the words on the page as they read. Hum or sing often. Like being around other people. Enjoy the performing arts. Quick Tips for Auditory Learners Record lectures and then listen to them Repeat material out loud and in your own words Discuss materials in your study groups Read textbooks aloud Listen to wordless background music while studying Knowing your preferred learning style will increase your opportunities for success academically, personally and professionally!

Visual Learning Style Review Home Auditory LearningVisual LearningKinesthetic LearningAssessment link Would you like to test your knowledge of the Visual Learning style? Simply click here Are you a Visual Learner? How many of the characteristics of a Visual learner do you have? Do you: Like to read. Are a good speller. Memorize things by seeing them on paper. Are organized. Would rather watch, than talk or do. Have good handwriting. Notice details. Remember faces better than names. Have trouble following verbal directions. Are easily distracted by noise. Doodle on their paper Facts about Visual Learning The occipital lobes at the back of the brain manage the visual sense. Both the occipital and parietal lobes manage spatial orientation. Quick Tips for Visual Learners Use visuals to teach lessons, including pictures, graphics, images, charts, outlines, story maps, and diagrams When giving verbal directions, write down key words or phrases and use visuals Use dry erase boards with colored markers. Use color cues, framing and symbols to highlight key information. Write down and highlight key information. Utilize flash cards when possible. Provide visual activities, including maps, videos, models, puzzles, matching activities, computers, and word searches.

Kinesthetic Learning Style Review HomeKinesthetic LearningAuditory LearningVisual LearningAssessment link Would you like to test your knowledge of the Kinesthetic Learning style? Simply click here. Are you an Kinesthetic Learner? How many of the characteristics of Kinesthetic Learning do you have? Do you: Touch, feel, and handle things. Try it themselves first. They will not want to see a demonstration. Show rather than tell. Learns best when physically engaged in a "hands on" activity. In the classroom, benefits from a lab setting where he/she can manipulate materials to learn new information. Learns best when he/she can be physically active in the learning environment. Benefits from instructors who encourage in- class demonstrations, "hands on" student learning experiences, and fieldwork outside the classroom. Bears down extremely hard with pencil or pen when writing. Quick Tips for Kinesthetic learners Perform experiments Take field trips Be involved in role-playing activities Stand or pace when memorizing Play Games Work at a standing desk Knowing your preferred learning style will increase your opportunities for success academically, personally and professionally!
