2 Antifederalists- individuals who opposed ratifications of the constitution. Abstain- to not take part in some activity such as voting. Ambush- a surprise attack Arsenal- a storage place for weapons and ammunition.

3 Back Country- a region of hills and forests west of tide waters. Boycotts refuse to buy items from a particular country. Burgesses- elected represenitive to an assembly. Bounty- money given as a reward such as to encourage enlistments in the army.

4 Cabinet- a group of advisers to the president. Canal- an artificial waterway. Caravel- small fast ships with broad bow. Cash crop- farm crop raised to be sold for money.

5 Debtor- person or country that owes money. Decree- an order or decision given by one in authority. Demilitarize- to remove armed forces from an area. Deprecate- to fall in value.

6 Effigy- rag figure representing an unpopular individual. Emancipate- to free from slavery. Embargo- an order prohibited trade with another country. Export- to sell goods aboard.

Guerrilla tactics- referring to surprise to attacks or raids rather than organized warfare.

10 Impeach- to formally charge a public official with misconduct in office. Import- to buy goods from foreign markets. Impressments- forcing people into a service as a navy. Integrate- to end separation of different races and bring into equal memberships in society

Joint stock company- a company in which investors buy stock in the company in return for a share of its profits. Judicial Branch- branch of government including the federal court system that interprets the nations laws. Judicial review- the right of the supreme court to determine if a law violates the constitution.

12 Bleeding Kansas- with proslavery and antislavery forces in Kansas arming themselves the outbreak of violence became inevitable. Kansas Nebraska- in 1854 the dispute over slavery erupted in congress again. Kearny steapen watts- Led his troops to California and new Mexico led about 1500 Calvary soldiers along the Santa fe trail. Keelboat- Lewis and Clark send back groups with reports and specimens of some of the plants and animals that were unknown in east.

13 Landslide- an over whelming victory. Legislative Branch- branch of government that makes nations laws. Literacy- Ability to read and write. Loyalists- American colonist who remained loyal to Britain and opposed the war for independence.

14 Mayflower Compact- A formal document written in 1620 that provided law and order to the Plymouth colony. Majority- more than half. Mercantilism- the theory that a states or nations power depended on its wealth. Mission- religious settlement.

15 Nationalism- loyalty to a notion and promotion of its interests above all others. Neutral- Taking no sides in a conflict. Nomads- People who move from place to place usually in search of food or grazing land. Nullify- to cancel or make ineffective.

16 Offensive- position of attacking or the attack of itself. Ordinance- a law or regulation. Override- to over turn or defeat as a bill proposed in congress. Overseer- person who supervises a large operation or its workers.
