Trained a group of Trust volunteers as community peer-researchers, to inform improved health service provision in Gateshead. It included participation at all stages of the project cycle. Nottingham Council. Local Authority community workers and volunteers from across the city were trained to undertake ‘community appraisals’ in their wards and pass the training on to other community representatives. Tranquillity Mapping. Using participatory methods to explore perceptions of tranquillity. The research was used to develop a meaningful definition of, and method for exploring, tranquillity and to inform a GIS map of relative tranquillity.

Geography and Environmental Management Catherine Butcher 0191 2273848 catherine.butcher@northumbria.ac.uk www.northumbria.ac.uk/peanut/ A Peanut Approach - Making it more Participatory. Demystifying ‘participation’ by ensuring that… Although it’s academically informed, It remains straightforward and practice based, But is also ‘process’ led (using tools, activities and principles) to… ‘find ways for people to be involved in different processes’ Where processes can be pretty much anything that people (the community) want to achieve… Monitoring and Evaluation, Action Planning, What’s For Dinner.

Geography and Environmental Management Catherine Butcher 0191 2273848 catherine.butcher@northumbria.ac.uk www.northumbria.ac.uk/peanut/ South Tyneside Participatory Community Appraisals The most ‘deprived areas’ of South Tyneside (lots of acronyms… NRF, LAA, LSP) Develop and implement an Area Partnership Action Plan Began in Horsley Hill estate in 2005, 3 pilot areas Peanut trained and supporting local community representatives as partnership and project leaders (also trained Local Authority and other partners) Partnership included Local Authority, Police and Fire, Health, Education, 3rd sector, Housing, Business

Geography and Environmental Management Catherine Butcher 0191 2273848 catherine.butcher@northumbria.ac.uk www.northumbria.ac.uk/peanut/ The Process… Orientation Planning Asking about “The estate – Likes? Dislikes? and Changes?” Collation and themes Solutions Verification Action Planning sessions (solutions to aims, objectives and service provision) Action

Geography and Environmental Management Catherine Butcher 0191 2273848 catherine.butcher@northumbria.ac.uk www.northumbria.ac.uk/peanut/ Things that went (are going) particularly well… Orientation and demonstrations generated interest Training – straightforward, new skills, effective Volunteer time (1000+ hours per area) Partnership working (Local Authority staff and other Partners) Household surveys show that… Dissemination (especially at higher level) Attracted political attention! Beyond research, on-going process (Action Plans completed, revisited, new areas and new partnerships) Cleaner, Greener, Safer

Geography and Environmental Management Catherine Butcher 0191 2273848 catherine.butcher@northumbria.ac.uk www.northumbria.ac.uk/peanut/ Things that went (are going) less well… Volunteer sign up Questions and tools A ‘whole community’ approach but not if you’re young Verification…what verification? Themes and clusters Inadvertently produced an ‘us and them’ layer of bureaucracy Action but not enterprise… The cuts

Geography and Environmental Management Catherine Butcher 0191 2273848 catherine.butcher@northumbria.ac.uk www.northumbria.ac.uk/peanut/ Lessons learned… Groundwork essential (What have we got, can we do?) Keep it simple, it became overly bureaucratic Making assumptions about ability One size (of process) doesn’t fit all Must include notions of responsibility, who will take it forward Call it what it is… Participatory Service Delivery Greater emphasis on Group-Working Solved problems have a ‘cost saving’ attached

Geography and Environmental Management Catherine Butcher 0191 2273848 catherine.butcher@northumbria.ac.uk www.northumbria.ac.uk/peanut/ Google Trends – ‘Donate, Disaster’ (22.11.10)

Geography and Environmental Management Catherine Butcher 0191 2273848 catherine.butcher@northumbria.ac.uk www.northumbria.ac.uk/peanut/ A Hard Nut to Crack… ‘Us’ and not ‘Them’
