6 AZCCRS Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards ensure your child has the academic knowledge and skills to be successful in college, career and life. Academic standards set the expectation for what students need to know and be able to do in each grade and subject. They form the foundation of what teachers teach and students learn in the classroom.

7 Reading Goal: Create a balanced literacy environment where children become independent readers, writers and thinkers. Our language arts curriculum includes textbooks from our core reading program from Scott Foresman, “Reading Street” as well as leveled guided reading books and other resources including RAZ Kids. Pearson Realize Whole Group and Small Group Instruction

8 RAZ Kids RAZ KIDS is a subscription based (1 year) on-line leveled reading program for use at school and home. Donations ($5-$10) are greatly appreciated!!!

10 CAFE CComprehension - I understand what I read. AAccuracy – I can read the words. FFluency – I can read accurately with expression and understand what I read. EExpand Vocabulary – I know, find, and use interesting words.

11 Daily 5 The Daily 5 is a classroom management program to deliver instruction and practice in Reading and Writing. 1 - Read to Self 2 - Work on Writing 3 - Read to Someone 4 - Listen to Reading 5 – Word Work

12 Word Building Goal: Help children see patterns in words. Spell high frequency words (60% of written text). Word Building rather than Spelling is a component of our balanced literacy program. We have moved away from “Friday Spellers”. “Words Their Way” Phonics and Phonemic Awareness

13 Writing Goal: Create independent writers Students will learn and practice different types of writing: personal narratives, expressive writing, literary response and functional writing. Students will utilize Thinking Maps as a part of the “Write from the Beginning” program.

14 Math Goal: Develop critical thinking skills and problem solving skills and a deeper understanding of concepts. Students will gain essential math skills through a hands-on approach utilizing our Engage New York Mathematics program with AZCCRS exercises and journals. http://greatminds.net/parents

16 All Time Best! Daily Data Tracking Celebrating student success MTSS Fluency –School wide Focus (Individual, Class, Grade Level Success)

17 Science Goal: Learn about the inquiry process as well as how people contribute to science. Science related topics are integrated into other areas of our curriculum through units of study such as weather, animal habitats and/or animal life cycles.

18 Social Studies Goal: To learn about people (of long ago and today) and places in our world. Students will explore topics in our Harcourt Brace Social Studies series such as rules and laws, map skills, holidays, with Arizona and American symbols (to name a few).

19 Special Classes Students are on a 4 day rotation for special area classes (specials). Our schedule is as follows: Day 1 - P.E. (Jeff Tiedeman) Day 2 - Music (Caroline Kaupa) Day 2 – Mandarin (Wenjie Fang) Day 3 - P.E. (Jeff Tiedeman) Day 4 - Art (Ashley Moran) * On P.E. days please make sure your child wears athletic shoes and dresses appropriately. If they do not dress appropriately they will have to sit out of P.E. and this does effect their grade. A water bottle is greatly encouraged.

20 Grading In 1 st grade, students receive the following grades: E – 90-100% S – 70-89% N – 60-69% U – 50-59% Grades will be earned for English Language Arts (ELA) Reading, English Language Arts (ELA) Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, and special areas (Art, P.E., and Music).

21 Performance Level Students will also receive a Performance Level rating according to the AZCCRS - Arizona College and Career Ready Standards. 4 = Demonstrates above level proficiency independently 3 = Demonstrates grade level proficiency independently 2 = Demonstrates grade level proficiency with support 1 = Demonstrates below grade level proficiency with support

22 Assessments All first grade students in DVUSD will be taking the Deer Valley Math Assessment (DVMA). It is a cumulative assessment that will identify areas of strength and weakness throughout the four domains of Math as identified as in the AZCCRS. All first grade students will also be taking the Deer Valley Reading Assessment DVRA (revised this year). These assessments are not taken as grades but used as guidelines for instruction.

23 Parent Involvement We love our parents!!! If you have not already, please sign up on our volunteer form in any capacity that you are available. Volunteer training is a must! The next session is on September 17 at 10:00 a.m. here at Diamond Canyon. Copier training is immediately following at 10:30. If you still need a photo badge, please see Lorrey in the front office.

25 Homework Beginning in September, homework will be assigned on Mondays and due on Fridays. Homework will include, Reading, Math, and ELA. We will be also be utilizing pearsonrealize.com, razkids.com and spellingcity.com to access assignments.

26 Stay Connected! Email notifications will be sent home weekly (Mondays) to direct you to our updated website. The link is on my signature. Check your child’s folder for daily information and assignments. Best time to call me at school during the day: 8:00 – 8:30 a.m., 3:30-4:00 p.m. Email anytime: however, I will check before school, before lunch and at the end of the day.
