STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Summary of the « Radio Science Workshop » Hervé Lamy (BISA) Petra Van Lommel (STCE)

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 OUTLINE Goals of the workshop Radio projects on the plateau Existing and potential collaborations Communication platform on the EU SW portal

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 GOALS OF THE WORKSHOP What are the radio science projects carried out on the plateau? What are the technical needs and the methods used? Can we share software / hardware? Can we benefit from experience of other groups?  increase efficiency in the framework of the STCE This workshop was the continuation of a « radio day » that we already organize on October 14 2010.

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 BRAMS : Belgian RAdio Meteor Stations BISA project Goal: detect and characterize meteors with forward scattering radio techniques Status: network in development, should be partly operational in August (Perseids), fully operational in October (Draconids) Contact person: Hervé Lamy, Sylvain Ranvier Website: brams.aeronomy.be

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Whistler observations BISA project Goal: detect Whistler waves with a VLF antenna in Humain Status : system operational, preliminary results obtained, analysis will start soon. Part of an international project AWDANet (Automatic Whistler Detector and Analyzer system’s network) Contact persons : Fabien Darrouzet, Sylvain Ranvier

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Lightning detection RMI project Goal: detect, locate and characterize lightnings above Belgium Status: system operational with 5 SAFIR antennas located in Belgium, accuracy of location ~ a few km Possibility of extending the network with stations located in France and Netherlands Contact persons: Dieter Poelman, Geert De Sadelaer Website : http://radar.meteo.be/en/3337 408-Lightning+detection.html

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Monitoring station in Humain ROB/BIRA/RMI Goal: to monitor the elm perturbations induced by the future extension of the quarry in Humain. Status: hardware setup being procured, monitoring should start in July, duration of one year Contact Persons: Christophe Marqué, Sylvain Ranvier

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Committee on Radio Astronomy Frequencies (CRAF) Christophe Marqué is a member Goal: coordinates activities to keep the frequency bands used by radio astronomy and space sciences free from interference. Contact person: Christophe Marqué Website : www.craf.eu

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Radio Science Geodesy and Rotation ROB Goal: planetary geodesy (retrieve internal physical parameters) from the position of a s/c orbiting a planet (mainly Mars at the moment) Contact persons : Véronique Dehant, Pascal Rosenblatt Website :

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Solar radio observations in Humain ROB Goal: monitoring of solar activity and research : solar flares, CMEs, irradiance Status : Callisto spectrograph operating since 2008 (45-400 MHz), Phoenix 2 spectrometer (300 MHz-3 GHz) fully operational in spring 2011, measurements of F10.7cm flux Contact persons : Jasmina Magdalenic, Christophe Marqué. Website : sidc.be/humain

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Radar observations of auroral arcs BISA Goal: to use observations of auroral arcs with EISCAT facilities in Tromsø (Norway) to model magnetosphere- ionosphere coupling. Status : Observations carried out during 2008 and 2009 campaigns. Data have been reduced and are currently interpreted Contact persons : Cyril Simon, Hervé Lamy

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Existing collaborations Radio astronomical site of Humain : currently used by the 3 institutes for various experiments. There is a strong need for a fast internet link in Humain. STCE funding?

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Existing collaborations (2) Dourbes: the emitting beacon of BRAMS is located there Monitoring of the electromagnetic perturbations induced by the quarry in Humain  collaboration between Sylvain Ranvier (BISA) and Christophe Marqué (ROB) to select the hardware.

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Possible future collaborations BRAMS/SAFIR teams: share experience about VHF interferometry and use of the PPS of a GPS to get accurate time measurements. In the 2 nd part of 2011, BISA will start developing a meteor radar system  located in Dourbes? To be discussed. Comparisons between strong irregularities in the TEC observed with GPS measurements, Galileo data or ionosonde data, and strong meteor VHF echoes.

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Possible future collaborations (2) VLF measurements need use of ionospheric models for TEC Future measurements of the F10.7cm flux in Humain will be very interesting for many activities in BISA. Others?

STCE Meeting – 06/06/2011 Communication platform Set up by Stijn Calders (BISA) on spaceweather.eu Possibility to upload and share documents and/or softwares An idea was to make a list of hardware material that could be useful to all scientists on the plateau. This would avoid duplicity. Not very successful so far… but we’ll keep trying.
