Smart Grids and Meters Workshop November 2015 بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم Electricity Loss Sudan - Khartoum The Arab Union of Electricity (AUE) The Sudanese Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (SEDC) 1 Paper: The Sudanese Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (SEDC), Sudan

Potential Difference of Voltage in Distribution Level: –Medium Pressure: –33/11 KV –Low Pressure: –415/240 V –Method of Loss Calculation: The electricity loss ratio is calculated by collecting the consumption of main energy purchase between SEDC and SETCO and STPGC mostly recorded by MMS system, representing in the energy received compared to the energy sold to customers monthly through the prepayment system after estimating their consumption ratio in addition to the energy consumed in the meters of big customers 2

3 This Determined By The Following Voltage

Methods of Identifying, Reducing Technical Loss: 5  The Technical Loss is the loss of energy in the electricity network elements like the carrier lines, transmitters, transformers, control, protection and measuring devices during the electricity power transmission and distribution operations. This loss is inevitable and cannot be annulled altogether, but it can be reduced by improving the status of the electricity system.  The technical loss is determined by the following: The use of modern technologies such as (Ne plan) program, which has already been applied in most offices.

6 The technical loss is determined by the following:  Commitment to optimum transformers load.  Commitment to balance of transformers loads  Commitment to install condensers on lines and load centers.  Carrying out program of maintenance and renewal of networks and revising sizes and lengths of connectors and load based standards  Use of links extensions in connections (Line tap)  Calibration of Measurement Devices  Commitment to optimum connection of meters and connection materials

Methods of Identifying, Reducing Non- Technical Loss: 7 The non-technical loss (commercial) is difficult to measure and identify in the electricity system, which makes it imperative for electricity companies to control and contain it to zero. The non-technical loss is reduced by:  Activating lines and meters periodic inspection program to ensure correct (plug in, programming, security and calibration.

Proposal & Recommendations 8  Availing Specialized training and the provision of work aids like the different programs and software of analysis  Providing voltage and current transformers high-pressure measuring devices and the devices and aides for revision and follow-up of network components  The smooth interdepartmental coordination mechanism regarding the process of loss  Adopting the Two Way Communication System for meters.  Maintaining periodical inspection and campaigns and zero and weak purchases  Deterrent legislations  Periodical meters revision and calibration  Simplifying new connections procedures

Futuristic Outlook: The Sudanese Electricity Distribution Company Ltd. (SEDC) has vowed to reduce the technical and non- technical loss to 15% by the end of 2016, then to 11% by yearend 2020, God wills, by developing urgent and future plans to achieve its goal. Wishing You All Success 9
