3 LEAD-IN A. Different people may view and respond to risk and danger in different ways. Take a simple test and find out whether you have a risk-taking or risk-avoidance personality. Risk-taking Personality Test Does driving a fast car appeal to you? When the odds are against you, do you still feel it is worth taking a chance? When you are catching a train, do you often arrive at the last few minutes? Would life with no danger in it be too dull for you? Do you think people spend too much effort guarding their future, with savings and insurance? Do you always wear a safety belt when travelling in a car? Will you point out your teacher's mistakes if he/she is wrong? Are you comfortable with visiting a new place alone? Each of your "positive" answer to the questions above accounts for 1 point. Add up the points you have got, and your score is ________ points. Result analysis: 0—4 points: risk-avoidance personality (carefulness) 5—8 points: risk-taking personality █ □ █ □

4 LEAD-IN B. Pair work. If you were in the position for making a bungee-jumping attempt, would you do it or not? Tell your partner your decision, and explain why. Especially since you already quit your other job. That was risky. B: I know, I know. Everyone tells me that! A: Were you nervous during the interview? 12 Counselor: Today we’re going to talk about your tendency to take risks. Some people, like you, are inclined to take risks on a daily basis. But there are others who cannot accept even the smallest amount of risk. Client: You’re kidding! I had no idea such people existed! Counselor: Of course they exist! But tell me about your life! Client: I take lots of risks with certain things. Last summer for instance, I decided to learn how to paraglide. I simply chose a group that has a lot of experience and signed up for a couple of lessons. Once I tried it, I was hooked. Counselor: You must be crazy! Had you done something like that before? I made it to 40 feet once. It was an incredible experience; probably similar to walking on the Moon. Counselor: Are you ever afraid? I can’t believe that you would do such high-risk activities and not fear for your life! Client: Well, I do fear that some accident may happen. But, if I let the fear decide, I will never experience many things that this life has to offer. I only live once, you know! And life is short! Client: You bet I had! One person jumps out of a plane, with a parachute, and a board strapped to the feet … Man: You mean like a skateboard? Woman: Yeah. So the sky surfer does tricks in the air. And the partner parachute out of the plane with a camera and films the tricks. It looks like surfing, but in the air, not the water. Man: That sounds scary. If the parachute or the other safety equipment doesn’t work, they could fall to the ground. They’re risking their lives. Conversation 1 Woman: Let’s watch this show about Vivian Wegrath. 26 Most people in developed countries have a low risk of major injuries at work. But workers in the most dangerous jobs work in industries that have a minimum of 30 fatalities per year. It is suggested that the following occupations are part of the top 10 most dangerous jobs in the United States. 1. Aircraft pilots. Although aircraft pilots have one of the most dangerous jobs in the nation, people should not be afraid of flying. This category also includes the pilots of smaller aircraft that are far more likely to crash than a huge Boeing or Airbus plane. 2. Fishermen. Fishermen have to endure storms, fog, wind, and other difficult conditions to bring back the fresh seafood for our dinner. Bad weather puts fishermen at risk of drowning if their boat sinks or they fall off the boat. Most people in developed countries have a low risk of major injuries at work.
