1 www.nottingham.ac.uk/schoolm3 School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering If you’re looking for a top quality Mechanical Engineering course with excellent job prospects, this is the one for you. Mechanical Engineering is recognised as the broadest of all of the engineering disciplines. Our courses cover all the engineering science, design and computing you need to become a Chartered Mechanical Engineer (CEng) and are accredited by the IMechE Both programmes have a common Year 1 and 2 to give a comprehensive grounding in the subject. Engineering science, design and computing are covered in depth. Design is a key integrating element in all years of the courses. Real-world engineering, the importance of communication and team-working skills, the need to display entrepreneurship and initiative, and the relevance of appropriate management and business principles are all emphasised. At the end of Year 2, you decide whether to opt for the BEng or MEng routes. The MEng provides increased breadth and depth to your studies and includes a group design-and-make project in Year 3 and a major individual project in Year 4. You will also select optional modules from a wide range, including many at an advanced level, enabling you to tailor the degree to your interests and career plans. The MEng also offers specialist streams allowing you to gain expertise in one of several aspects of mechanical engineering – valuable for giving yourself an “edge” in the jobs market. If you opt for the 3-year BEng, you’ll do a major individual project in Year 3 that can range from very design oriented to highly mathematical or research-based. You also get to choose optional modules from the wide range available. We’re looking for highly motivated students fascinated by the challenges of engineering. Our typical entry grades are AAB to BBB. We offer attractive bursaries to high flying students in all years of the course. www.nottingham.ac.uk/schoolm3 Evacuation chair for the mobility impaired – a 3rd Year MEng Group Design & Make Project BEng / MEng Mechanical Engineering UCAS codes H302 (BEng) /H300 (MEng) School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Individual Project – Appropriate Technology – Design a car battery charger for the developing world

2 www.nottingham.ac.uk/schoolm3 School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Qualifying Stage (Year 1) The first year will give you a broad introduction to Engineering, covering design (including computer-aided engineering, engineering drawing and a design & make project), engineering science and maths, as well as helping you to develop your communication and team-work skills. Part I (Year 2) This year builds on the first year to give you a sound basis in all the key design and engineering science skills needed by Mechanical Engineers. At the end of the year, you will make your choice of either MEng or BEng degree paths (there is a minimum attainment level for progression to the MEng). Part II (Year 3) All students undertake a major project in Year 3; a group design & make for MEng and an individual project for BEng. These are complemented by a mix of core and optional modules covering more advanced engineering science and management studies. A selection of the optional modules is shown below. MEng students can opt for one of the specialist streams to give themselves expertise in particular areas. Part III (Year 4) In Year 4, you will undertake a major individual project that will take 33% of your time throughout the year. This will allow you to do some advanced research work into a subject area of your choice. Taught modules are at a more advanced level to give you in-depth knowledge and understanding. There is also good scope for studying other subjects, either to follow your interests, or to tailor the course to your career plans. www.nottingham.ac.uk/schoolm3 School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Year 1 Design & Manufacture 1 Mechanics of Solids 1 Mechanics & Thermodynamics of Fluids 1 Electromechanical Systems 1 Materials and Materials Forming Engineering Mathematics Professional Studies Year 2 Design & Manufacture 2 Mechanics of Solids 2 Mechanics & Thermodynamics of Fluids 2 Dynamics Materials 2 Computer Programming Engineering Mathematics Management Studies 1 Year 3 BEng BEng Individual Project Computer Modelling Techniques Management Studies 2 7 engineering options Year 3 MEng Group Design & Make Computer Modelling Techniques Management Studies 2 6 engineering options Year 4 MEng MEng Individual Project Advanced Technology Review Integrated Systems Analysis 6 engineering options Module Options Year 3 Options include: Advanced Dynamics of Machines, Structural Vibration, Control and Instrumentation, Material Models and Modes of Failure, Stress Analysis Techniques, Aerospace Technology, Automotive Technology, Biomechanics, Energy Management, Mechatronics, Concurrent Engineering, Ergonomics and Product Design, Software Engineering, Flexible Automated Manufacture, Manufacturing Process Capability, Aerospace Manufacturing Technology, Transport Materials, Processing and Properties of Materials, Finite Element Analysis, Polymer Engineering, Fibre Reinforced Composites Engineering, a Modern Language Year 4 Options include: Aircraft Propulsion Systems, Aerodynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Turbulence and Turbulent Flows, Internal Combustion Engines, Conservation and Recycling of Materials, Automotive Vehicle Dynamics, Sustainability, Aerospace Materials, Automotive Materials, Advanced Materials Characterisation, Lean Manufacturing, Robotics and Automation Technology, Rapid Product Development, Technology and Knowledge Management, Work Organisation and Job Design, Cognitive Ergonomics, a Modern Language Common 1st and 2nd year for all Mechanical Engineering courses
