1 School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Automotive This course is a mechanical engineering degree that will give you a recognised specialism in the field of automotive technology. We see this as a flexible alternative to an Automotive Engineering degree. This course is designed for people who think they would like to work in the automotive industry. By having a degree in mechanical engineering (automotive) it is immediately apparent to a potential employer that you have all the core skills a mechanical engineer would be expected to have and that you have chosen to specialise in modules relevant to automotive. Aero-engineering The aerospace industry employs many mechanical engineers. Many companies in the sector will employ more engineers with a mechanical degree than those with an aerospace degree. For instance within Rolls- Royce Plc (Civil Aerospace) mechanical engineers would typically account for 70%. The advantage of undertaking general mechanical engineering with a specialism in aerospace as opposed to an aerospace degree is that your potential employment market is much wider. MEng Mechanical Engineering streams School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Stream Ethos Experience has shown that students have particular interests within the broader subject, and that the research interests of the School provide a base on which to build modules that appeal over a range of areas. The seven streams ensure that in the 3 rd and 4 th year of the MEng degree the modules of interest in the specific types of industry can be taken together to give an insight into its specific requirements. The pre-selection of the modules for a stream then allow selection of a small number of supporting modules depending on the particular skills and techniques that are generally applicable. 2 School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Manufacturing If you have elected to follow the Mechanical Engineering degree you may wish to specialise in manufacturing. The manufacturing modules are shared with the traditional Manufacturing Engineering and Management degree programme and taking this variant allows you to understand the manufacturing processes and the requirements for industrial production of components and assemblies including automated and flexible production systems, quality and supply and the capabilities of the manufacturing process. Modern Language In years 3 and 4 you take one module of your chosen language each semester i.e. 20 credits of language each year. These modules replace optional engineering modules which slightly reduces the engineering content from the standard mechanical engineering course. You can start a language from complete beginner level or continue with a language youve already studied to GCSE, AS or A2 level. The language centre will assess your level before you commence language modules. Study abroad is also an option - all students can apply via the Universitas 21 scheme to spend a year of their course at a leading University overseas, or you can spend a year at our unique Malaysia Campus. Students taking one of our 'language' variant courses can spend a semester at a European University via the Socrates scheme. Languages offered include French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Mandarin Chinese. Materials New materials such as lightweight alloys and polymer composites are continually being developed and there is a need for graduates with an in-depth knowledge of materials, their properties and manufacturing routes, so that best use can be made of them. You gain specialist knowledge in areas of materials, such as processing and properties of alloys and composites and the materials employed in aeroengine components. Core modules provide you with specialist knowledge about materials design and their performance in service with applications in industries such as aerospace, automotive and power generation. Management This course builds upon the broad base of the mechanical engineering degree, allowing students to develop an understanding and knowledge of the business, management and financial environment in which mechanical engineers work. In collaboration with Nottingham University Business School, the course provides a unique combination of engineering science, design and business studies required for a career in engineering management. Introductory business and management modules are studied in year 3, providing a solid foundation in finance and markets, economics and entrepreneurship. In year 4, further studies provide advanced skills in financial strategy, marketing and product management.
